Book Marks, the Rotten Tomatoes for Books

Literary Hub, a site dedicated to book news, essays and excerpts, has launched Book Marks, which they call a “Rotten Tomatoes for books,” aggregating professional critics’ takes on new literary novels and assigning them a letter grade. Currently it checks 70 sites with professional reviews. Once a book has three reviews posted it is added to the Book Marks site. http://lithub.com/bookmarks/ |

Thank you. I've been hoping that someone would start a site like this. RottenTomatoes.com is more dramatic than lithub.com/bookmarks because book reviewers don't write as many pans as film critics. But, so far, I like BookMarks. |

Is it supposed to be just for literary novels? I see nonfiction, SF, and fantasy on the home page alone.

It launched in 2011, and is called iDreamBooks.

Thanks, the more the merrier. It looks as though Book Mark limits itself to professional critics and iDreambooks allows individual bloggers. Nothing wrong with either approach. IDreambooks has been at it longer and has more reviews. |

I'm not sure how closely they follow the Rotten Tomatoes model, but the problem with RT is that if (in a worst case scenario) if every critic gave a movie a barely passing rating it would still show up as 100% fresh. And in borderline cases it requires some judgement on RTs part to decide if the review should be rated fresh or rotten. I mainly use it as a link to the reviews and not just look at the percentages. |

Do they include reviews for classics and older novels?
