Hello folks...... Need some help

I am want to buy a PRS 500 refurb but there is one thing stopping me ....... I got a large PDF collection ....... and I dont know 100% if i can upload them to the PRS without any problems .... If I need to convert them to a PRS friendly format so be it ... as long as it can be done...

Can the PRS 500 take my PDFS?

Hi Pete and welcome to the Forum. I'm not sure you can convert PDFs to read on the 500 but my technical betters will chime in here soon and give you a good answer. The 505 can now do PDFs with the latest firmware

I would suggest you convert them all using Calibre which you can find in it's own section on this forum.

You can read pdf files directly on the Reader. BUT,the text may be very small (as they are generally formatted for larger page sizes).

You should definitely test out your pdf files on Sony's free Library software to see how they will appear on the Reader straight-up.

If the text is too small, you have 2 options: convert pdfs using Calibre. (See the forums here for conversion utilities and info.) You can then view the converted pdfs in Sony's software to see how those will look on the Reader. OR, you can get a 505 which reflows pdfs (no conversion needed) and are much more legible in general.

As a 505 owner I must recommend against buying either Sony product if you want to read large amounts of PDFs (of supposed varying complexity). The 500 will view pdfs but unless specifically formatted for the screen (you could do this by printing the documents to a software PDF-printer) it will be nigh-unreadable. The 505 with the latest firmware updates offers a reflow hack which allows proper font resizing but this leads to weird sentence and paragraph breaks - IMHO it is a little unreadable. But better than the 500.

As for converting, there are various tools out there but depending on the complexity of your PDFs the end results may be less than spectacular. You may want to look into a reader with a larger screen, or investing in a different format (disclosure: I loathe PDF as a format).

Hi Petars,

I convert my PDFs using pdflrf (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13135). It preserves the format of the pages and makes the text a nice size and entirely readable. I recommend trying 'portrait mode' first and if the text is still too small use 'landscape mode'.

The only downside is that pictures that don't fit on one page will be chopped in half, but that doesn't happen too often to me.

pdflrf is great. Depending upon the content (and the status of DRM) you may want to consider calibre. RTF is not a good choice for documents on the Sony as neither the 500 or the 505 support graphics in RTF files.

Another option for you may be to create custom PDF files for the Sony. I have attached to this post a copy of the Sony provided guide for creating PDFs for the 500/505. (It has been posted elsewhere at MobileRead but I could not find it so I am attaching another copy rather than just promising to provide the link later.)

I have used the guide to create custom PDFs for a client for use by their technicians. The resultant documents were easy for them to use and very clear to read. They also had a number of diagrams in them and the PDFs were superior to the LRFs in this regard.

Many people do not like PDFs and they have gotten a bad reputation on the Sony 500/505. This is mainly from people expecting to read A4/letter sized PDF pages on a 6" screen with perfect results. When used with a PDF made for the 6" screen size (as Feedbooks PDFs are for example, the results are wonderful.

Hey...

The results form caliber look good ........... PDF to LRF can do do writed content as I found out so thats good ......... I hate DRM.... Caliber seems to be working on pdfs with lots of diagrams......

Thanks for the PDF about converting to PRS friendly format ........ That is my goal ... to eventually convert all my pdfs to that size.........
Playing around right now with a PDF printer to reduce the white space content of the PDFs and to reformat them to a paper closest to the screen resolution of the PRS505

..........

Hope fully I will be able to perfect this system to make great looking pdfs...... on the PRS.......
