How does Calibre work out a book's series?

Afternoon all,

My calibre library had the first book in a particular series in it. I had manually assigned it a series tag.

I just now added epubs for the remainder of the series and Calibre had automatically added the correct series tag in the correct order.

How did it work that out? does it analyse the filename looking for possible series identifiers?

Will it only do this if I already have a book in that series in my library?

Is this something in the Epub file itself maybe?

Series is NOT a dublin core (DC) standard.

That said. Calibre will have inserted Non-standard series metadata if it was used in the production (and any conversion where it is now present in the Library) , which any Calibre library will read upon adding. (that is why you sometimes see it right after adding)

Get Metadata:
Various Metadata sites will provide series info. These are not controlled by the Author or Publisher and IMHO are frequently inconsistently recorded and will need massaging to be really useful in grouping by series.
You need to decide on your standards for Series entry

Mystery not Mysteries (almost always, singular in any series. Hardy Boys stays )
I drop Leading Articles (A, An)
I drop Trailing 'Series" Duoh!
There are various threads on how to index Omnibus Series. Pick one

Manage Series PI is a great Massager (but not a source. that is up to you to identify)

I guess what I'm asking is does Calibre try to work out what series a book may be in when adding an epub? I simply dragged these files into the Calibre window and it was a pleasant surprise that they were already correctly classified.

It can be, EPUB supports custom (namespaced) metadata in addition to the Dublin Core standards.
Some EPUBs will have embedded series metadata.

"read metadata from filename rather than file contents" is also possible, but that implies you manually activated it. And manually changed the regex pattern to one that searches for series info.

...

Some publishers might include series metadata, I guess.
