Glo Preventing Kobo Glo syncing Collections with Kobo

I have been working my way through the article "Kobo Shelves and Collections". Being tired of my data being collected by all and sundry, I attempted the fix to prevent my collections being synced to Kobo each time I get an update. First I deleted all book files on Kobo using Calibre. Then in Win8.1, I tried...
1. Finding directory.kobo\kobo directory\Kobo eReader.conf
2. Opened this file in notepad
3. Found [ApplicationPreferences]
4. Next line added SyncShelves=false
5. Saved and exited
I then synced to Kobo.
Out of curiosity - as there were books mentioned in that Kobo eReader.conf file that had not been on my ereader for yonks - I rechecked this file. The line I added - SyncShelves=false - was gone
...... and the book lines were still there e.g. lastLibraryReadingStatusFilter_shelf_filterByBooks helf%28Foreigner%20Short%20Stories%29=removeReadin gStatusFilter()
How do I make this SynShelves=false, permanent - and how do I clear all memory of what books have previously been synced?

The "SyncShelves" option was a non-supported option in the firmware. It has been removed in a recent firmware.

For the sync, nothing about the sideloaded books are synced. If you have collections with only sideloaded books, then collection name will be synced, but the it won't have any books on it.

The lines in the config file with the collection names are recording that collections configuration. There could be a line for each collection with the sort, filter and which view you are using. I don't believe this gets synced.

Firmware updates can be downloaded directly w/o wifi or syncing at all.

Thanking you both very much. I did find the line eventually by doing a "find" on Sync. It had moved down the bottom of the .conf file. But having a non-Kobo site to get updates from is excellent! I would still like to know if it is safe to remove the

The config file is sorted when it is written, so things might move from where you put them. The order isn't important. But, "SyncShelves" has disappeared from the firmware and I am pretty sure it doesn't do anything.

You can safely remove any line from the config file. If you do, it just reverts to the default values. As I said, those particular lines are settings for the view for a collection. Removing them just means you it goes back to the default view.
