Were to find Kindle for PC software

I am looking for the exe or similar to install the kindle reader on a desktop PC. I want to run it under wine for linux or if I have to under XP. The download page at amazon seems to be replaced with something about submitting your phone number to get an 'app'.

Use winetricks. It will auto-download and install the current version directly from the super-secret download url that Amazon would probably email you.
It will even report on WINE bugs you need to account for.

Although for future reference, the super-secret download url is http://amzn.com/kindlepcdownload but Amazon got rid of the pages that link to it.

Technically speaking, winetricks doesn't download from that redirect url -- it uses the final resolved url. But I file pull requests for winetricks as needed, to update it.

Or to be more precise, if only Amazon didn't confuse everyone by occasionally giving you a link, and occasionally asking for your contact info.
They are probably targeting different OSes and OS versions.

I'm not sure why so many "helpful" folks are completely rejecting my prior statement that Amazon returns a different page to different people, and most people do not get a download link.
But that is what we long since concluded was happening, and given that people are still contradicting each other over what they see on that landing page, I see no reason to think anything has changed!

Mnementh, would it help if I gave you a screenshot of what I see?
Note the complete absence of a download link where it instead asks you to give your contact info (I used 2345678901 for testing purposes, hope that isn't actually anyone's number).

That's exactly what they do. When I click the link on my Windows PC I get a download link to K4PC, but when I run it on my iPad I get a link to the Apple App Store for the iOS Kindle App. Are you running Windows or Linux? If it's Linux, that might explain why you're not seeing the "Download" button?

Giving the user the appropriate reading app for their OS may not be to everyone's liking, but it probably qualifies as a "comprehensible reason".

because I've provided tech support before to people who really hadn't found the right download page.

No, that does not explain in any comprehensible manner why they tore down the old per-platform pages, redirected them ALL to a shared splash screen, and then instead of giving you an appropriate link for your platform, ask you for your phone number so they can text you the link instead.

If you're running Linux, perhaps they don't have a reader for your platform? I've tried it from a number of different platforms, and the page always gives me a download button or link for the appropriate platform (I've tried it on Windows, iOS and Android).

Anyway, I've given the OP the direct download link for K4PC, so his question is answered.

But again, tearing down the old pages is still silly. If you are specifically hunting for a specific version, then why are they stopping you?

And I have tried on Windows as well, and still gotten the "give me your phone #" shtick. But I cannot remember which version of Windows I tried.

I have no idea what exact criteria Amazon uses to determine who gets a link. It seems rather unpredictable.
Maybe they roll the virtual dice.

I gave the direct link, and the winetricks instructions -- so he should be double-covered.
But I could have sworn at one point the intermediate (non-direct-download) link you gave was nuked and replaced with a redirect to the unified landing page as well.

You need to chill out dude, because that's precisely what we are trying to be (or certainly I am anyway) helpful...

The reason I stated the link is to the right of the "Send" button is because I missed it the first time I went to that page and thought maybe Timbow did the same as me, nothing nefarious and certainly with no intention of "explicitly rejecting" your post. Don't fall into the trap of thinking everybody is disagreeing with you personally, sometimes we are just trying to help...

Thanks for the screenshot, I can now see that YOU don't have a link however it is still possible that Timbow might have missed it as I did the first time.
