Can't install Calibre after swapping hard drives

So my problem began when my storage hard drive, drive D:, started dying. I have my OS (Windows 7) and a few other programs on a SSD (C: ), but most of my other programs and files were on D:. I managed to save that info, but that wasn't the problem. I got a new hard drive to use for storage and named it G:. Since I didn't migrate any programs or anything, my computer still thinks some programs installed on D: are still installed on my computer. even though D: is completely gone. Calibre was one of them, but I went through the Control Panel and removed it from my system.

Now, however, when I try to install Calibre, it says it's computing the space requirements, then gives me a notice "Invalid drive: D:/" and ends the installation. I can't find any trace of Calibre left on my computer to remove, and the installer never gives me the option to install it in a different location. Anyone have any ideas on things to try? It's really frustrating because I want to add more books to my Nook and I don't want to go through the hassle of moving my library to a different program and whatnot (plus I just like Calibre).

Did you look in the registry? The MS Trusted Installer writes stuff there; the uninstall should have cleaned it out, but maybe not in this scenario.

Take a System Checkpoint, install CCleaner if you don't have it and use its Registry Cleaner - you may have to run multiple times to to get a clean sheet. If something goes wrong to do a System Restore.

Rather than installing Calibre from an MSI on a non system drive you might want to consider using Calibre Portable, which is completely self contained.

Ah, that worked, thanks. I didn't use CCleaner, just went into regedit and found the Calibre key. Thanks again.

If you want to install calibre to a different location, simply click the advanced button in the installer.

I've already solved the issue, but if you read my first post, the installer never even got to that point. As I said, it gave me an error almost immediately after trying to run it. That wasn't my problem.

The somewhat obscure issue is, IMHO, a bug in the installer design. Users need to be able to get to the Advanced panel when the Available Space test fails.

The installer should not fail in this way. Given the current set of dialogs, a reasonable redesign would be either:

1: retain current function order, but upon failure of the initial space available test set a flag to record failure and then present the license panel. The license panel would test the flag and if set, indicating failure, after the "Accept" box is checked the panel would continue to disable the "Install" button leaving "Advanced" being the only way forward.

or-

2. reorder the panels moving the space test after the license and, if opted for, advanced panels. The available space function would then return to the Advanced" panel with an error message to select a new location should the space test fail.
