Issue with opening two editions of the same book

Hello,

I've been redirected to the forum from Calibre Help page.

First of all I would like to point that I don't want to discuss the way Calibre store files, I am looking for resolution of technical issue.

For my personal usage reasons I keep in Calibre different versions (editions) of the same document, versioned by Series; it works fine with Calibre books list but all the files has the same filename; also the same effect is when books has the same title with some change at the end (i.e XYZ Part 1, XYZ Part 2) long enough to be shortened by Calibre (in this case filenames will be XYZ - author, XYZ - author).

The issue is when I try to open few books/documents in the same time - in many cases software doesn't accept multiple files with the same name opened in the same time.

I realized that Calibre marks versions of the same book by unique ID added to folder name; my problem could be simply solved by adding the same ID also to file name. Could you kindly educate me how to do this?

Thank you in advance.
Regards

Unfortunately you cannot change the Filename format within Calibre without breaking Calibre's capability to track eBook files.

The names of files in the calibre library can't be changed, but the files names of exported books, or books sent to your ebook reader can be automatically changed. Would this do?

There's only one way to change the name of the book file: change the title of the book in the Calibre Library.

If it's really a major issue for you, you could set up a custom field to store the "real" title and then use a modified unique title in the actual Title field.

I don't recommend this unless you're willing to put up with a lot of other limitations. One of the biggest issues is if you're going to be exporting the books to devices that index the metadata title instead of the file name. A metadata plugboard might help here, although I don't use them myself so I don't know for sure.

Also, what program are you using to read these books? Maybe you could find an alternative. I know, it's a lot to ask. People don't like to change their favorite software. But if the current limitations are too much, something has to change in your work flow.

Thanks for the answers
Too bad that there is no way to change filename format. With added unique ID to filename Calibre could be excelent software to manage documents stored locally. I hope will be possible in future

You mean:
Code:
{title}-{id}
You can NOT change how the Library works, but you CAN control how it sends

Hi,

Now is like
Code:
{title}-{author}
where {title} is limited to concrete number of chars

Could be for example
Code:
{id}{title}-{author}
My workaround at the moment is "Save to disk" but it is not convinient at all
