Custom Column not needed in other Libraries

Is it possible for one of these two options to happen?

1 - Have a way to permanently disable the pop up that there are custom columns that are not in the destination Library? I'd even prefer a pop up when Calibre starts up than one each time I try to move a book to another library. EDIT: This is misleading. If a new column is created, or sending to a new library, the pop up should be there. Only if it is dismissed for a particular column/library should it not show up again.

-or-

2 - If I copy a custom column just to get rid of the pop up, to have it NOT show up in Edit Metadata? If I only have it in the Library to get rid of the constant alerts that are distracting and annoying, I don't really want to see it. In the columns, since it's empty, I can stick it at the end and make it narrow so it doesn't take up much space, but in Edit Metadata, it just takes up space.

Even if both happen that's great. I know some I only use in column view not edit metadata, so picking and choosing would work great.

For hiding a column from the Edit Metadata dialog, you can use the Job Spy plugin.

You can also use a tweak to control the order of custom columns in Edit Metadata. If you use the "All on 1 tab" layout of Edit Metadata and have quite many custom columns, you won't see those on the bottom unless you scroll down. (That's what I do with rarely used columns).

For the table view, you don't need to put the column at the end and make it narrow - just right-click on the column and choose "Hide column X".

But these are just workarounds; hopefully someone has a better solution.

I'll have to look at that if no other options.

I already use the tweak, but thanks anyway! Right now I don't have enough custom columns, but if I start adding them all, I might...

Actually I do know that, I had been thinking if they couldn't be hidden I could do that, and ran with that.

I am of the school of: 'Don't disable' warnings (in Calibre). They were put there to protect you from doing an action that you might later regret

Time passes... You forget about those 'adjustments' to the default functioning that you made back in 2010 and NOW, can't figure why you are losing data when you move books between libraries.

In my case, the Main Library has more fields, than the Intake (the one I use to import, ALF & massage metadata before making it into the Main)

Since you can already turn off warnings (especially to delete books, etc which I agree we should not do), that should not be an issue. If you haven't copied a column, and specifically said you don't want to copy a column, well...5 years down the line it's unlikely to be an issue anyway.

I don't want NO warning. If I add a new column, yes I want to be asked. If I create a new library and copy an existing book with existing custom columns, I want to be asked, even if I previously said no for other libraries.

In my case, I 'fix up' all my books in the intake library before sending them where they belong, therefore it needs all the columns from the other libraries. So at times, I can get up to 10 warnings (if it's a busy day). Then, if I have to restart for some reason, that can be another 10. Distracting and annoying.

Like I said, I can copy the columns, but then they're just taking up space in the libraries that don't need them. I would certainly prefer turning off the warning completely once I've seen it (or have the option at least to turn it off, just like the option is there for the delete book warning)

As far as creating a column that you can't see, you can use the View Manager plugin. Set up a view without the columns you don't want to see. This even works for the built-in columns.

Yes, but both (not just one). The Job Spy Plug-in is a tool box of 20 different tools, among which are specific tools for each of those two options.

For your [#2], there is a GUI Tool within the JS Plug-in that does that. See this explanation of how it works:

For your [#1], there is a GUI Tool within the JS Plug-in that does that. There are 2 links:

@DaltonST

I had found your PI for the hiding columns, thanks to the suggestion from Joanna...It took me nearly an hour to figure it out, but I think I have a handle on it. I was confused about the other suggestion (don't copy column) since I hadn't had an update notice yet LOL.

I would personally find it more useful for the Source to use column names, rather than libraries, and Target to be libraries. Is that at all possible (no rush if it is! Just a question!)? Maybe an either/or scenario?

If not, that's all right too, this DOES help tremendously already, and I might find other good things when I have time to go through the other options the plug in offers and how I might make use of them!

Thanks!

Sorry, but Calibre works on from/to combinations when suppressing the message, which is why I designed the GUI Tool that way. If you get Kovid to redesign Calibre for you, I will revisit your request.

Nah, like I said, just a question. It's more than what I had and very useful. Can't learn if I don't ask
