Loading JUST unread ebooks? Also updated info?

This may be hidden in the threads, but I couldn't find it. I'm very excited to use Calibre Companion for loading my books on to the SD card for my new K5 Fire. I did a test yesterday with 1,500 books and it worked without a hitch for all the mobi and AZW* books (yes, need to convert some of the epub).

First Question: is there a way to load the collection that excludes already read books? In my main library, I have a column with Yes and No, Yes is selected after it has been read. I also use the stars column rating any book I have read. Could I use either of these columns for exclusion?

Second question: I had not yet updated all my tags (publishers have a gazillion on each book and I'm reducing to 1-3 per book). As I fix them, will CC automatically update the tags when I connect it as a server to this device? OR, do I need to delete the collection and reload after I've made all the fixes?

In calibre sort by the read column, then only select the non-read items to send to CC.

Each time you connect CC to calibre as a wireless device any changed metadata in calibre will be updated in CC upon connection.

If you want to keep your read books but see only the unread ones, you need to use the Yes/No column you already have in Calibre and mark in CC settings that column as the Reading state. You have a specific section in CC settings to do that. Then if you use the grouping settings to see only the books marked as No, you'll only see those books, and you can select the way you want them ordered by default in other part of CC settings.
If you want to only keep the books you haven't read, look for the use of another Calibre plugin, Reading List, in combination with CC. There are some treads in this forum talking about how to use it, I don't use it myself, so I can't help you with that.

Can you clarify whether you only want to transfer unread books from your PC to your tablet, or whether you want to transfer everything, but only see unread books on the tablet?

Thanks Milady and Harry! Harry, in answer to your question, I just want to transfer unread books. I have plenty of space, 64 gigs, if this is not easily feasible.

If you are using the Wireless Device connection type, then to send only unread books you:
  1. Connect CC to calibre as a wireless device
  2. In calibre, search for
    Code:
    #read:no and ondevice:false
where #read is the lookup key for your Yes/No column
  3. Select all the books
  4. Press the "Send to device" button
If you are using the cloud connection then
  1. Connect CC to your cloud provider
  2. Find the "Read" metadata item in CC's top-level display and tap it. Long-press on "No" to select all books that are unread
  3. Go to CC's top-level display, find "On device", tap it, and tap "No" (tap, not long-press).
  4. Tap the three-dots menu button and choose "Download all"

You can delete books from CC after having read them by going to Book Details from the main book list/grid. You can also delete books from calibre using search etc when connected as a wireless device.

What you want to do is very easy as I attempted to convey in my response to you previously. However, if my explanation on how to accomplish your question wasn't simple enough hopefully Chaley's step by step answer will help you.

You could also use the SmartEject plugin to verify on ejection that all unread books in calibre are on your device. Prior to ejecting it would give you the option of transferring them to your device. Chaley's search code could be used in this plugin.
