An excellent OPDS catalog for arXiv

For science buffs and technology geeks who like to read free science papers, arXiv.org is a well-known site. As of this writing, arXiv provides open access to 1,144,295 e-prints in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Quantitative Biology, Quantitative Finance and Statistics.

If you like to read those PDF papers on a tablet or mobile phone, then you should probably be interested in accessing the papers via a well-implemented OPDS catalog. Being able to do so is very convenient.

The free OPDS catalog for arXiv, which I've personally used for many months and would like to recommend, can be accessed at
http://arxiv.maplepop.com/catalog/

The OPDS catalog hierarchy perfectly mirrors that of the science subjects as listed on the arXiv.org website. Excellent!

There is a much older alternative, http://arxiv-opds.herokuapp.com/catalog.atom, which was down for several months earlier but is recently back online.

This older OPDS catalog hierarchy does not perfectly mirror the hierarchy of the science subjects as listed on the arXiv.org website. For example, (1) there should be 6 instead of 14 first-level catagories, (2) Astrophysics, Condensed Matter,...,Quantum Physics should be second-level sub-catagories of first-level catagory Physics, (3) Quantitative Finance is missing from its list of first-level categories.

Just played with OPDS Catalog Validator as listed on MobileRead Wiki on the two arXiv OPDS links listed above,

and found that while the maplepop link passed validation perfectly,

the herokuapp link failed validation with errors like
