Sideloading an epub from Windows 10

Hello, I have a Sony PRS 650 to which I want to load a recently purchased DRM'd Kobo book. I would like to do this from a Windows 10 laptop. The laptop doesn't have any sort of epub reader installed at this time, so there's no epub file on the computer, just the ascm link. Would Adobe Digital Editions be what I would want? It's not at the Microsoft App store, but it can be downloaded from Adobe's website. |

I'm going to try installing ADE on my laptop and see how it goes...

Download version 2.01 instead of 3.x or 4.x. Version 2.01 only supports the old Adobe DRM, which has been cracked in 2009. Version 3.x and 4.x support newer versions of DRM, which have not been cracked at this time. If you use ADE version 2.01, your book will always be encrypted with the old DRM version, which you can remove by using Apprentice Alf's tools. If you use ADE version 3.x or 4.x, there is a chance that your book is downloaded with the new DRM, and then you can not remove it at this time. |

Oops, too late. I already downloaded 4.x. ADE couldn't see my Sony reader and I didn't feel like installing the Sony Reader software. I found the epub on my PC and copied and pasted it to...can't remember the exact file path now, but it ended up in a "media" folder in my reader. Not a pretty way of transferring books, but it worked. The book is in my reader and fully readable. |

You can de-authorize ADE, and then remove it. Then re-install version 2.01. Note that a book, once downloaded in 4.x with the new DRM, can not be redownloaded in 2.01. ADE 2.x only supports the old DRM, so if you use this, you will always receive books using the old DRM. ADE 3.x and 4.x support the old and new DRM, and it depends on the choice of the store if you get your book with the old or new DRM. Another point is that there are many (older) readers that don't support the new DRM, so if you download the book using ADE 3.x or 4.x, are unlucky enough to get the book with the new DRM and then try to side-load it onto an older reader, it won't work. |

You do need 2.0.1 because your 650 will not handle the new DRM. So if you are unlucky enough to get such, you're screwed.

I did download the ePub using ADE 4.x (before I read the posts about it). I used Windows Explorer to copy the ePub from the hard drive to the media folder on the 650. It looks fine, the book cover is even there. I am able to read the book on the 650. ADE didn't see the 650, but I can see the contents of the 650 using Explorer. |

The file path to the reader where I would copy and paste the epub is: Reader: database->media->books I've done this successfully with two epubs. One of them was downloaded to ADE through an acsm link. The other was a direct download of an epub to my laptop's hard drive. I just 'saved as' the title of the book. I then copied it to the folder as I wrote above. The computer is seeing my reader as another storage device. Last edited by 49Kat; 05-13-2016 at 07:21 PM. |

Does that actually work with DRM-protected EPUBs? Can you download them using ADE, and then upload them to the reader using Windows Explorer? I was under the assumption that ADE has to upload the books to make them work. I've never tried any of this to be honest, as I always import e-books into calibre, to have DRM removed through Alf's plugins. |

As I said, since I have an e-reader (2011), I've been using calibre and Alf. To be frank, if Alf hadn't existed, I might have had an e-reader, but not nearly as many (newer) books. | |
