User registration is broken

Hi, I'm trying to register a new account. However, the confirmation email never arrives. I've tried some other emails, but they say they're "not recognized", which is odd because I'm not trying to sign in. Here's the email hosts I've tried:

@icloud.com
@me.com
@mailbox.org
@[various domains of my own, none of which I've signed up with before]

This has been going on for 3 days and I've tweeted at @mobileread, sent support messages through the contact form and asked around on IRC for help, but no joy.

Finally, I found this account on "BugMeNot".

Anyway, I would love a hand getting a legitimate account created.

47 people have created new accounts on MR in the last day, so it doesn't look as if this is a generic issue.

Have you tried using a different web browser? It sounds like some issue local to you, rather than to MR.

Well, the site is PHP. So the browser shouldn't matter since the email is being sent server-side.

Also, the "not recognized" error should also be totally server-side.

Anyway, I've now tried again in another browser and same result.

EDIT: Here's a screenshot of the error

and the other message which only seems to show when I use my @me.com address, which is effectively just an alias for my @icloud.com address

However, no email ever arrives, even after days.

@hounddog - have you tried registering with a newly created self destructing email address - maybe all the addresses you've tried are somehow regarded already in use. That's happened to me on older phpBB boards (not for some years), had to contact webmaster and have them create and email me the account details.

If I try registering with a disposable email address, I get this message:

The domain part of the email you've entered is not allowed. You will need to change your email address in order to continue. If you think this is done in error, please click here to contact the administrator.

So, if you are seeing something else, the problem may be different. You can try using the link to contact "the administrator", but I'm not sure that will help...

I also tried registering as "new_test_user@icloud.com", and I just got the usual confirmation-email-sent message.

Could you have some malware in you computer? Are you in a country that could be considered as "suspicious" by the forum? Are you using some kind of anonymizing tool?

Curious - why would one want another account anyway, and why does MR allow such things anyway - IIRC there's even an pejorative internet slang expression for it.

MR does not allow a user to have multiple accounts, as specified in item 10 in the Posting Guidelines. If you want to have your username changed, please contact the moderating team.

For what it's worth, he says that he found the account that he's posting from via BugMeNot, which is a website that caters to people who wish to share logins to avoid registering with websites who require registration to participate. It is not his account.

(I came past this thread because I registered this account only yesterday, and was curious.)

Ah-ha - I saw the reference to BugMeNot but I knew not was it was and I was too lazy to google it. Looks like it also might be used to share logon id's and passwords to paywalled & subscription sites - I see there's some for the FT.

Ah yes - sockpuppets is the word for them. Silly word IMO, Lamb Chop and Shari Lewis never did any harm to anyone - did they?
