google play requirement
Chaley, I was thinking of buying the Nook Glowlight + this week. I read that I could load Moon Reader Pro onto it without having to root it. I was planning on also adding CC which I have owned and used for years. Someone in one of the xda forums said that they were having a problem with this because CC requires Google Play which can't be properly installed without rooting the device. Is this true? If yes, do you know of anyway to install CC on a non rooted device like the Nook Glowlight +?
Thanks Jackie |

if you don't have GP then you are responsible for getting the CC APK (install file) and getting updates. This isn't hard if you have another device with GP. You need to extract the APK from the device with GP then sideload it onto the Nook. I have personally tested this process by running the GP version of CC on stock (not rooted) Amazon devices that for obvious reasons don't include GP. The device must run Android 4+ to run CC V5. From what I see the Glowlight + runs Android 4.4 (Kitkat), so it qualifies. Older glowlights seem to run Android 2.3 so they will be limited to CC V4. Note that when CC runs on Kitkat, SD card support is limited even with CC V5. You can use an SD card with CC, but only the "application private directory". There is more information in CC's FAQ about this and related issues. If you don't feel like dealing with the sideload hassle then you can get the Amazon Appstore and get CC that way. Unfortunately there is no way to deal with the cross-appstore purchase problem, so you be required to buy it again. The version of CC on the Appstore requires Android 4 or better. I can't speak for Moon+. |

As always, great reply and great help. Thanks so much. You have a great product. If I have to go to a different source and pay again it would be worth it.
Just as an FYI I have about 6,000 books in Calibre and I load about 3,500 onto my phone and duplicate those on my two tablets and my ereaders so that I can pick up whatever device is near and charged and keep reading. Moon+ Reader Pro keeps my page synced and CC helps keep all the books in sync. Thanks again. Jackie |

OK, here is where I am afraid that I show my ignorance. I couldn't find the .apk files on either of my tablets. Is there a way to try and download again from Google Play and trap them. Any hints appreciated........Jackie

You can also do the job with some file managers, for example ES File Explorer (ES). In ES, go to the APP section (in the left pull-out drawer), long-press on CC to select it, then tap the small button at the top that looks like a pair of pac-men. ES will copy the CC APK to the "backups/apps" folder on your device. Once you have the APK then copy it to the new device somehow. The easiest way might be to email it. |
