Complex searches
I'm new to Calibre. I imported my Kindle books with the intention of using Calibre as a way to add metadata and use the metadata for organization and searching. For example I read a lot of mysteries, especially ones that are a series like Harry Bosch. I want to keep track of which books I've read so that I can select the next book in the series to read.
I take advantage of the $2 books that are featured in a daily email from Amazon and another service called BookBub. I'll buy a couple of books a week. I want to use Calibre tags to be able to search for new books to read, many of which I don't remember buying. I added a yes/no column to the search results panel called "Read" and have checked each book in my library with this flag. So that makes it easy to do a search for "Harry Bosch", sort in series order, and I see which book to read next. Great! I also added a pair of tags called "Read" and "Unread" thinking that I could do a search for like this: books with tags "History", "WWII", and "Unread" to create a list of World War II history books that I haven't read yet. This doesn't seem possible because the search function can't specify "and". It only uses "or". What can I do? |

As Kovid's link describes, you can actually create whatever search you like in the search box... but I suspect you were using the Tag Browser to auto-generate your search.
On the bottom: Alter Tag Browser ==> Search type when selecting multiple items ==> Match any of the items Switch to "Match all of the items". |

I didn't use the tag browser – not sure what it is. I tried the advanced search again and noticed in the search field that it said "or" so I changed it to "and":
(tags:"History" and tags:"Unread") That worked. Thanks for your help. |

Ah. The tag browser is the pane on the left -- it can be toggled on/off by the icons in the lower right corner.
Very useful for quickly finding specific groups of books, or with Saved Searches. |

![]() Then there's the so-called Advanced Search facility behind the binoculars, I say 'so-called' because I find it simpler than trying to remember the search syntax and easier than displaying and clicking things in the Tag Browser. If, like me, you're anti-mouse then Ctrl+Shift/F will pop it up. BR |
