Calibre and Google Play

I love Calibre. I love they way I can upload and store all my ebooks (epub) in Google Play and have my entire library available on my Samsung Galaxy SIII.

Sometimes I need to edit a book's metadata such as the title and/or cover. When I upload that book to Google Play, usually nothing has been changed. The "old" title and/or cover are displayed.

Why would this be the case? I thought "metadata" are the underlying, defining information so why would changes not be global? Apparently, I am only changing how books are displayed in the Calibre GUI and not actually modifying "metadata"? Is there something else to change to make the Calibre appearance global?

It's a minor annoyance and I'm simply curious. I still love the Calibre/Google Play arrangement.

The metadata changes are only applied when a book is sent to a device or saved to disk. They are not applied to the copy in the library.

You might look into the Modify Epub plugin. It allows you to write your calibre metadata changes to the epub file without having to Convert, or Save to Disk, or Send to Device. Otherwise, as pdurrant mentioned, your metadata changes are only affecting the metadata for the book in the calibre database, not the actual epub file.

Perhaps he could look at "Polish Ebook" too.

That works well, particularly for cover changes.

For other metadata alterations the Embed metadata plugin also works well.

I have been using Google play books for about 2 years now. I love it. I just wish it offered matching like Google Play Music does. That way I could easily upload ebooks I bought before switching to Google Play. On a side note, I also love that Google is digitizing classic novels and offering them free. I don't know if any other services do this, but good on Google for saving these books from the decay of time.

You can find classic books free at numerous places. Kobo, B&N, Amazon, Project Gutenberg, The Patricia C Clarke library here on Mobileread.
Kobo and B&N are epub, Amazon is one of their formats, PG and MR have a variety of formats.
Link to the library here.

You can upload epub format books to Google play books. From an android device use a file manager and tap on the epub file and one of the choices should be upload to play books.
