What do we know about "Collections"?

Here is what I know. Looking for feedback to round out my total knowledge of how this feature works.

1. Contrary to reports and complaints otherwise, I have had no trouble in creating collections on my main memory and both memory cards.

2. All of the items to be in a collection must reside on the same media as the collection is created. I wanted to have a collection that contained some items that were on different memory cards. I couldn't to that. So I moved some things around so the relevant items were all on the same card. Problem solved.

3. You can name the collection what you want. You cannot name/rename the individual items. They are hardwired to be the name/title of the item it points to.

4. The order of the items is maintained. Therefore you can create lists that show the ordering of a series of books. If you don't like the order, you can drag things up and down the list until you get it right.

5. You can look in the support data in the reader and see where and how your collections are stored. It is pretty simple and transparent.

6. Yesterday I lost all my collections. My reader did a reboot. That is probably when it happened. However, this is a huge problem because there appears to be no way to back up the collections.

7. I don't care if the reader wipes out my eBooks because I can easily reload them from my main computer. But there are several things in the reader that need to be non-volatile (or at least have a good backup procedure) if they are going to be used at all. 1) collections, 2) bookmarks, and 3) current position in each eBook.

8. The reader reboots/restarts often enough - for various reasons - that it is absolutely critical that this issue be addressed in upcoming firmware changes.

Thoughts? Opinions?

The PRS-505 can do collections on card, but the 500 can't

Actually, I do have Collections on my PRS 500 Memory card, so what he said is correct.

You Do need the New Version of the Sony Library software that cam when the 505 was launched to do so however.

Can't you create the collections on the PC with eBook Library or Calibra & copy the collections across?

Fair enough, I did try that a while ago, but have since switched to calibre, and also I've not yet actually filled the onboard memory so it's not really a hinderance to me

I don't know the answer either, but I know this is driving me nuts too! I just spent at least 5 or 6 hours (over the last week) making sure that all my collections were done, and all books were in the correct series order throughout all the books I have on my 505 and my SD card. All of a sudden, I shut everything down hit the eject button unplug from the computer, and all my collections and bookmarks, all my current page information, ALL GONE. Oh, and the thing isn't responding. I tried to just go in by author, only it's like... locked up or something. aaaaaaaaaaaah. HELP!

Using the reset button on the back will probably get you going again. But kiss your hard work goodby. Sorry. Sigh.

Let me play with that and see if I can learn anything useful. But since I have hundreds of books and dozens of collections spread over 3 memory media - and the elibrary is one giant list, I don't see right off how this is going to work. Now, if there were 3 libraries - or better yet, a subsection for each media you have (including removable ones not currently installed), then that might do the trick.
