manual addition confusion

I have a working Calibre library in 'my documents'

I also have a "complete" calibre library in users/****/Google Drive.

The second is kept up-to-date by manually adding books/folders from the main library (via external Drive F - triple backup!).

Before anyone asks, the reason for this obscure practice is that Google Drive helpfully screwed up about 20% of my library three months ago, so there's NO way now I'm going to have the main library in the googledrive folder anymore!!!.

Anyway........ the google drive library has all the books (with their metadata and covers and main library identity numbers) in exactly the same layout as the main library........

EXCEPT that if that library is opened it only shows the original library, with NONE of the manual additions!! If I try to add any of these from the (already existing) GD library, it adds them but gives them a new identity/number!!

What have I missed???

There's a database keeping track of all the books. You'll need to copy that as well.

google drive is INCOMPATIBLE.

use just about any OTHER cloud to store your Library

It mangles Calibre Library folder names which also end in a number inside paren
Take a moment to read the FAQ section on the Calibre Help site

I suggest you use something like MS SyncToy to create a mirror copy of your Calibre Library inside your Google Drive folder.

It will be safely backed up, metadata and all, and any nefarious changes Google makes will be overwritten on the next one-way sync.

Thanks guys. Good to know I'm not alone with Google Drive problems.

And now you mention it, I hadn't thought about the bulk metadata: grabbing that (from 'show hidden......') and copying it to the GD library did indeed show up the whole lot.
