Apple issues software update for "Error 53" issue

Apple has issued a software update to fix the "Error 53" problem that could disable an iPhone if the operating system detected that the fingerprint scanner had been tampered with.

Quote:
Apple has said sorry to iPhone customers whose phones were disabled after third-party repairs, and issued a fix for the problem.

Some users found that their iPhone stopped working following servicing by a non-Apple technician and saw an "error 53" message in iTunes.

Previously, Apple had said the error was a "security measure" taken to prevent fraudulent transactions.

Now, the company has released a software update to fix the error.

In a statement, Apple said that "error 53" occurs when a device fails a standard security test designed to ensure that the Touch ID fingerprint scanner is working correctly.

However, the company added: "We apologise for any inconvenience, this was designed to be a factory test and was not intended to affect customers.

"Customers who paid for an out-of-warranty replacement of their device based on this issue should contact AppleCare about a reimbursement."

And everyone else can **** off.

They even admit they were at fault.

Yes, I think that's that's the point. Apple are offering to reimburse anyone who had to buy a new phone as a result of this.

Are you criticising them for apologising and offering to reimburse anyone who had to buy a new phone as a result of the issue?

That's what I was getting out of it, too. Just trying to figure out what more Rizla thought Apple could/should do than to reimburse the people their error cost money. Surely they (Apple) shouldn't be expected to give those people who recieved IN warranty replacements some free money?

So my question to Rizla still stands: who is left (after reimbusing those who spent their own money to replace their iPhones) that Apple owes reparations?

Sorry about that. I didn't see that they were offering a fix. They previously stated the affected phones were toast.

Your out of luck $$$

[rant]
I recently got a notice of a Class Action award 3 years after I replaced the defective 3 year old appliance.
To get a claim, I had to:
Furnish the serial Number and purchase info
Purchase a replacement of the same brand

Duh!
I bought a replacement Dishwasher 3 years ago after discovering the failed part had been revised many times AFTER my version AND cost 1/2 the original price of the whole dishwasher. No way I was buying that brand again

I did not save the paperwork, besides, they had the warranty registration, which is how they knew to send a notice

so why bother, the claim would be invalid because it was incomplete.

The only people that win are the Lawyers

So Apple now offers to replace bricked devices.
What about those wireless contract penalties? What about lost time hassling your carrier?

They made a mistake, they are offering restitution and a fix. Error 53 gate joins the list of over blown Apple Gates

It is not just the physical phone; consider that there is time wasted & business contacts & the business dealings/agreements that are encrypted. Don't believe that all data will be recovered with a new phone.

If you have an iCloud backup (which is enabled by default on an iPhone), all data are recovered simply by selecting the most recent backup when you set up a new phone. If you're using your iPhone for important business deals, it's probably fairly unlikely that you'll have had the fingerprint scanner replaced by a backstreet phone repairer rather than by Apple.

...Unless, of course, your phone breaks when you are in an area where there are no official Apple service locations, and you don't have time to send your phone to Apple for a week or so, because you're using it for important business deals.
