PRS-505 External Battery

My battery is starting to show signs of its age. I am considering a replacement but have seen many horror stories from people who have damaged theirs whilst fitting a new battery.

So I don't really want to replace the battery until after a big trip I have coming up.

I was wondering about external batteries. I have one that I use for my mobile phone, which I can connect to the reader, but as it's USB, the reader can't be used while the battery is attached.

I would like a solution where I can attach the external battery and continue reading. Has anyone used something like this??

I have seen USB cables for PSP. If I got one of them, could I connect the USB to my battery pack and plug the PSP cable into the DC power port of the Reader?

That should work OK, but given the age of the 505, might it not be better simply to replace it with a more modern device? Buying a new battery and an external charger is going to cost you a significant fraction of the cost of a new reader, and modern "Carta" eInk screens are enormously better than the screen of the 505 - much, much more contrast, and hence easier to read. Plus you have all the benefits that frontlighting brings in terms of being able to read in poor light.
