Smile Questions on 505 and new firmware

I have a 500 and I'm thinking of upgrading to the 505 via Sony's new offer.

1. Adobe reflow: Will it make some of the technical books I have in PDF format readable? Lots of text with diagrams and such?

2. Adobe digital editions: You can "rent" books from libraries?
Where can I find books? Once my period expires can I rent that same
book again later or will it never give me access again.
Will it work with these:

Anything else I should know?

Thanks so much for helping me catch up on these latest updates!

I don't know about the technical books, but it definitely allows you to read library books. Thats the first thing I did when I upgraded mine. The books expire after 21 days and disappear from your reader. You can check them out again if they are still available.

eNYPL contains 11,079 ebooks you can digitally borrow, how cool is that! I think that's the one of the biggest ebook libraries out there. Too bad you need to have a library card to access em.

Compared to the Toronto Library collection, I only see 1085 fiction and non-fiction books
If you are in Toronto, here is the link the library collection. http://toronto.lib.overdrive.com

I was able to borrow a digital ebook, it was in Adobe Digital Edition. All I had to do was download adobe digital edition and authorize the computer and sony reader. Once done, you can transfer the ebook physically using the sony reader. It lasts for 21 days, after that I believe you can renew it.

It's interesting how they are only allowing certain number of copies to be checked-out when we know it's technically possible to have unlimited copies as it's 'digital'. I guess it has to do with the restrictions of the copyright, does that make sense?

What do you mean, "transfer the ebook physically"? I've never seen a physical ebook, and all the ones I have have dealt with have been transferred electronically.

Does anyone know of any California libraries that have ebooks available?

You can get a NY card for $100 per year for nonresidents.

Wow you are so technical. I'm pretty sure he meant copying the file from the PC to the reader. Which is a physical thing due to the nature of the way stuff is stored in flash ram actually.

It's tied to the pBook paradigm. When a library acquires pBooks, it buys a finite number of them. They then allow many people to use the library's copies of the books -- one at a time. Likewise with electronic books. The library pays for the number of concurrent copies they will lend. Making additional electronic copies -- above and beyond the number they have purchased -- would be the equivalent of running the pBook through the photocopier and lending the unsanctioned copy to library patrons. Just because it's easy to do doesn't make it any more right.

Valkyrie--

The link that Madam Broshkina's should answer your question very well. I've found that some libraries carry only Audio books for download, some have audio books and Adobe DE and some also have mobipocket (which won't work on the Sony.)

I personally have cards from the Sacramento Library, the San Jose Library, and the Santa Clara library. I use all three for downloading. Of these three, San Jose has the most Adobe DE formatted books (2978), while Santa Clara has 1566 and Sacramento has 690.

Calibre Edition 4.80

Does anyone have a copy of Calibre 4.80 as this was the last revision that worked for me. I updated to a current revision and it does not work. If you have 4.80 or earlier, could you please post the file here so I can copy it.
Thanks.

Thanks I'm going to look into these digital editions.

Does the Kindle support these ebooks?

Looks like I actually have to go to the library to get
new cards... I haven't used them in years!

Thanks!

Valkrie--

The only e-ink device that supports Adobe DE is the Sony Reader.

The Cybook and Iliad support Mobipocket with DRM--some libraries have Mobipocket books available.

Unfortunately, the Kindle only supports Kindle DRM books, which as far as I know aren't available in any library.
