Do I need to set up ADE on a Kobo?

Just ordered a Kobo for the first time (Kindle owner). I plan to use overdrive for library books, along with books from places like Gutenberg, and probably a few from the Kobo store. I've seen a few places talk about setting up ADE, and I'm trying to figure out what advantages and/or disadvantages I would get from setting up ADE. Is it something I should set up when I get the Kobo? Is it better to wait until I have a use case where I need it? Should it be avoided at all costs?

Thanks!

You'll need ADE for the library books. ADE takes care of the DRM part that is intergral to Library loans.

Edit: Unless your new Kobo is the One, which has library loans built in, if you live in a supported country.

I am getting the ka1, and I'm in the US, so I believe that piece should work automatically. So, in that case, is there no point to setting up ADE? That would be awesome to not have to deal with it.

As long as your library is one of the participating libraries for the Kobo/OverDrive connection then there should be no need to mess with ADE (unless you decide to buy Adobe DRM'd books from somewhere or want to download Adobe encrypted copies from Kobo [as opposed to or in addition to kePub's directly to your device]).

You need ADE if you get any books with Adobe DRM. These will be any epubs purchased with DRM and library books downloaded to the PC. If you only use DRM free books, or books downloaded directly to the device from the Kobo store, including books borrowed using the Overdrive integration, you don't need ADE.

One note on the KA1's Overdrive support. The books are supplied from Kobo and not from the library. I've run into several books where Kobo does not have the book so I still needed ADE to download the book and transfer it to my KA1.

Another potential issue is that not all libraries use Overdrive so your library may not allow you to borrow directly to your KA1. One library that I had a out of state (well, out of country) card with switched their backend to CloudLibrary (I think) which made the Overdrive support useless for them.

I haven't set ADE up on my Aura One as yet. Just signed into my library with card # and password and checked out books get delivered upon sync. I'm also in the US. It *is* awesome! Though I did once check out a book where it couldn't download it even though it was in the Kobo store. Think there was a mismatch on the listing or something. Read that one on an older device.

P.S. My library does use Overdrive. Not all libraries do, in which case you might need ADE.

I don't have access to libraries that have a decent selection of ebooks, so I've really no idea how that works, but I do buy from Kobo but make sure those books don't have DRM. And the books I buy from Amazon are all cleaned and converted. So I have never set up ADE on any of my epub readers.
