Calibre not opening on windows 8.
Hello everybody, during a few time I am facing a problem with the calibre software. It does not open in windows 8. I verified the task manager and it is there, but no interface appears.
Tried some solutions found on the manual and in the forum, but no success. The manual suggests to run "calibre-debug -g" on the cmd.exe and post on this forum the results, as you can see bellow: Microsoft Windows [versÆo 6.2.9200] (c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. Todos os direitos reservados. C:\Windows\system32>calibre-debug -g calibre 2.49 isfrozen: True is64bit: False Windows-8-6.2.9200 Windows ('32bit', 'WindowsPE') 32bit process running on 64bit windows ('Windows', '8', '6.2.9200') Python 2.7.9 Windows: ('8', '6.2.9200', '', 'Multiprocessor Free') Any help is appreciated! I'm tired of uninstalling and reinstalling it everytime I need to use it. ![]() ![]() |

It may be on 2nd monitor (now missing) if Calibre shows on the Taskbar.
Fully disable (remove extend desktop... tics) the second monitor in the Control Panel: Display Properties: Settings |

@wildm - are you using the portable version, if not and you have 64 bit Windows then:
if you are using the 32bit version try the 64 bit version, if you are using the 64bit version try the 32 bit version, If I were you I'd also update to Windows 8.1. The lifecycle status of Windows 8 is very confusing, some MS statements appear to say it's OK up to 2018, others say 2023, others even hint that it died on Jan 9 2016. BR |

Thank you guys for all the help!
I first verified the second monitor issue, but it didn't word. After that, I uninstalled Calibre 32 bit and installed the 64 bit version. Now it is working, but the funny part is that it was a 64bit before the issue, then I installed the 32 bit and the problem started again. Now it is perfect with the 64bit! lol ![]() ![]() |

![]() This is scary (just started working). It should not matter (on a 64 bit OS). 32 or 64 bit use the same config settings, so those must be OK. The only differences is which Programs folder gets used for the EXE. |

I got a bit confused too. But anyway I'll try to update to windows 8.1 or 10 and see what happens. Maybe it is an issue with my system, not the software. But anyhow it just happened to interfere in Calibre app. :/
Restarted windows a few times and Calibre is working good. |

W10 is nice with exceptions. IMHO Do check out the limitations (what you will lose) before you go that route. My Laptop is staying at W7 because some stuff I use in the field is not compatible or M$ removed that feature. |

That's not the only difference. The major difference is that if you have say 8gigs ram, the 64-bit version has more memory to play with in very intensive conversions. We've read of conversions failing in the 32-bit version due to lack of ram.

After upgrading to Windows 10, you have 30 days in which to exercise the one-click revert to previous version option. I've done over a dozen upgrades, mainly from 7, only one of which had to be rolled back due to some Jurassic Park hardware, no suitable drivers—but the hardware isn't even fully functional on 7  Couple of GenX/Y user's couldn't handle Win 10 emotionally (everything worked, albeit some of it a bit differently), so they went back to 7. As usual baby-boomers who want to keep up to date have less trouble coping with change. But many in the GenX/Y cohort claim they want to keep up to date—but they don't want anything to change BR |
