How Can I Get Duden On My Kindle Touch?
I don't need to look up German words. I just want to read the Duden Universalwörterbuch as a normal book on my kindle touch, so theoretically even a simple pdf format will do. But I just can't get my hands on it anywhere.
![]() Any ideas? |

I solved the problem myself and now my Kindle touch has a nice Duden dictionary that's automatically consulted when the book is encoded as German.
If anyone is interested, here is how. Part I - Getting the dictionary 1. Download a kindle reader for PC from Amazon.de, install it. 1a. If your Amazon account is in US, change it into a German one. 2. Download a free German ebook from amazon.de kindle shop. I picked a Jules Verne one. Just pick one at random as long as it's in German, not English or any other language. 3. Open it in your kindle reader on PC. Higlight a word using your mouse. Kindle Reader would think you are trying to look up a German word and it downloads the Duden dictionary automatically. 4. Go to where Kindle Reader stores file on your pc and identify which .azw file is the Duden dictionary. Mark it or remember it. Now you have a Duden dictionary with DRM protection. Part 2 - De-drm the dictionary file There are probably many ways to do it. I googled for five minutes and downloaded a plugin to Calibre, dragged the Duden file into Calibre and there, the de-drmed file showed up in my Calibre library. I saved it in .mobi format then dragged it kicking and screaming into Kindle under documentaries/dictionaries category, so it's sitting pretty next to the original Oxford dictionary & co. Now I can look up German words on touch as fine as long as the book is encoded as "German". Last edited by tanteoma; 02-16-2012 at 12:18 AM. |

I would like to read italian, german and english books. Do you know you can do the same steps, in order to install a monolingual italian dictionary? Can you also install bilingual dictionaries and do they works integrated in kindle? Do you know if this procedure also works with kindle 3 keyboard? I have read that the kindle 3 key is better than the kindle touch.... Thank you in advance, fotonic |

It should work, but no guarantees. Which device you get is of course up to you, but here's my personal opinion: I used to have a Kindle 3, which I accidentally broke, and bought a KT as a replacement. I personally find the KT far superior in terms of usability. Last edited by ixtab; 03-15-2012 at 08:57 AM. |

there are free dictionaries as well. (like the ones on this page: http://eb.lv/dict/ )
Just copy them to your documents folder ( works on Kindle 4, touch, 3,... ) |

Although so far no one has said or done anything amiss in the thread, the Moderating Team would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that while we allow discussions of DRM in the abstract, detailed instructions and links to DRM removal tools or websites is forbidden.

That said, part2 above is actually superfluous. Because the two "devices" (real Kindle, and Kindle for PC) are tied to the same account, you can simply copy the DRM'd dictionary to the Kindle as it is, and it'll work.

This is not true. Amazon's DRM scheme ties the books to individual devices, not to accounts. It is not possible to move DRMed ebooks between devices (e.g. a Kindle and Kindle for PC).

I am a Kindle 3 / Kindle Keyboard user and performed the 4 steps mentioned above by "#2 tanteoma 02-16-2012, 12:16 AM". I can confirm it works event today! This just to help users with the same problem in the futures. This definitely is a way to get the monolingual dictionaries for french, german, italian, spanish, portugues, etc. even on your old kindle.
Just remember that "Kindle for PC" stores the .azw files in a the windows folder "documents>my kindle content". For me there was no need to do anything with the DRM, seems like was/is again right. If your kindle is assigned to the same account as the kindle for pc programm it should work - at least for me it did today! |

I do point out that there are free books in German, French and other languages in every Kindle store. You could also download a sample since it too would force the use of the dictionary you want.
