After upgrade to Win 10, Calibre upgrades do not install

Recently upgraded to Windows Windows 10 from Windows 7 with Calibre 2.44 installed. After upgrade Calibre works fine, but new versions do not install. I get to the "Calibre Setup" dialog box, but the status line does not start (even after waiting a long time) and new version does not start. Have disabled virus protection, no help. Other programs install and upgrade with no problem.

THanks for the help,

Per

@fartang - try this - right click the msi file and use the "Run as administrator" option.

right click on msi files does not give that option, it only gives the "install" option. Right click on exe files gives the option of "Run as administrator" but Calibre is distributed only as msi. When I start running the msi file a dialog box with "install" with a shield in it appears (install as administrator) I click on it, another dialog box opens, but the progress line does not start, even after a long time.

Really, are you sure its not there, I see it here (I have UAC off)

I suspect that MS's latest me-too, nanny-state monstrosity is responsible, see ===>>> SmartScreen Filter. It's designed to force you into their MS-Store walled garden Ψ²

Another thing to try - open up the Properties for the msi, if it's Blocked then hit the Unblock button.

BR it is not there with a normal W10 (pro) install

BTW Look for the flashing UAC icon on the task bar. (It can easily get submerged.)

Just click that and follow the prompts

I login as an Admin user and I don't see it as a context item in explorer.

Something else is coming into play (The user customized beyond the box)

Run as Administrator as a context item is not available for .msi files for user accounts having Adminstrator rights, nor is it available to accounts even with the "hidden" elevated administrator rights (run Command Prompt (Admin) with net user administrator /active:yes).

Offhand, the only way I know to enable it is via a registry edit (that is not to say there are not other ways nor that there is not a downloadable tool that does it; I'm just too lazy to look .) That for Windows 10 and as far as I recall at least Win 7 and Win 8 too.

But to be frank, while I used to give myself the "hidden" elevated administrator privileges I have not done so since Windows 8 came out and I cannot recall since needing it.
