Completely shut down WiFi on KP3
I have a KP3 and I have noticed that even though you set on 'airplane mode', the KP3 still scans for WiFi hotspots nearby. My battery barely lasts a week. I wonder if there's a way to prevent KP3 from scanning for hotspots nearby ?

Turning on airplane mode should do it. Have you tried a reset (hold power button on for 30 seconds)?

I've already said its on airplane mode but continues to scan for hotspots.

Go get your k3.
Pull up the menu and tell me exactly what it says.
You should have airplane mode turn off.
If it says airplane mode turn on then your wifi is on.
Look in the upper right hand corner. It will show an airplane if airplane mode is on.

So what you're saying is, you turned off the WiFi ( == turn on Airplane Mode) but it didn't actually get turned off.

That sounds suspiciously like you didn't really turn it off.

Do note that the original Kindle firmwares referenced turning WiFi on/off, which was inaccurate regarding 3G.

When the Paperwhite came along, Amazon switched it to turning Airplane Mode off/on, and in doing so reversed the meaning.

Alll I can say is, no one else has reported the WiFi draining the battery while turned off, and considering that the User Interface also seems to think it is on, since it is listing hotspots in the "choose me please" popup... I really do think the simple answer is that you made a mistake and turned it on instead of off.

Factory reset or just a reboot?

I have learned over the years when a device of any kind starts messing up, a reboot or restart will usually fix the problem.
This includes DVD players, satellite dishes, tvs, phones, computers, tablets and ereaders.
