Battery Q
My family has an old Kindle 1 which has an easily replaceable battery and there are reasonably priced 3rd party battery manufacturers.
We also have a few PRS-T1 units and I don't even know if you can buy batteries. When they were available they were more expensive than what we paid for the readers. They're also difficult/impossible to replace for a regular person. We were looking at getting a Kobo, but a search showed that the batteries are replaced via a reader exchange program. That made my head explode. Does anyone still build a unit that you can pop out a battery and replace for a reasonable price? I don't relish throwing away a reader when the battery dies, but the way prices move, that's really how it works out. |

There are no modern eink devices with user-replaceable batteries, but there are devices with batteries that are easier to replace than others. Eg the Kindle Voyage has a battery that's much easier to replace than the Kindle Paperwhite.

That's what I was afraid of: we're only renting these readers.

In what way does that constitute a rental agreement? The key difference between renting and purchase is that when you rent something you don't own it. The fact that an eInk reader has a limited lifespan does not alter the fact that you own it, and hence in no way whatsoever are you renting it.
You can replace the battery in pretty much all devices, should you wish to do so. Given, though, the way that prices drop and technology improves, whether you'd wish to do so after the 5 years or so that a lithium battery will last on average is open to question. I'm sure that in other discussions we've had its been mentioned that designing a device so that the battery can be replaced leads to a larger device. I also think that there are shipping laws that apply to devices with removable batteries. (I might also be totally wrong)

No, I'm a computer programmer. Can you explain, please, why you believe that you don't own an eInk device?

Sure, but the OP appears to be suggesting that the purchase of any device which doesn't have a user-replaceable constitutes a "rental", which seems a somewhat strange idea. Rental is purely about who owns something, not how long you can use it for.

Maybe he got it at a Rent to Own place. Those are places where $20 down will get you pretty much anything and $20 a week for 18 months will get you a $500 item. ![]() |
