looking for ereader help
hello.
i'll try to make it short, im gonna read books, lots of them, can't read on pc, eyes get too tired, so i'd like to buy an ereader . i don't know much about technology nowadays so * i don't have wifi, and anyway im lookin to transfer books from pc through usb * guess i need screen light option , but not eye-tiring anything. + maybe buttons to move page forward would be nice as i have heard some are having problems with touchy screens but this is not that important to me * the important part is that as they'r gonna be mostly informative learning books , i'd need some kind of a way to highlight text and later get it on pc/word, but could it work in a way that i can get all the touchscreen highlighted(noted idk) text from the book after i have finished reading it on my ereader and transfer it to my pc/word? maybe there are ereaders allowing specific apps for this, and i guess for dictionary i'd need wifi, so it's less important. I could pay 100 $ + not looking for anything too expensive thank you. |

The dictionary works without wifi because it is on the reader.
Now what country are you in and where do you plan to find these great learning books? |

can it? that's nice then. i live in europe and let's say these "books" are more like a bunches of text on pdf, i just put it simpler, but format is changeable with the right applications on pc, in case ereader can't read pdf, right? If you mean it like " i should be buying everything im gonna read on my ereader anyway", then i have nothing to say to you. yes there's probably going to be something that's out there for sale, but i'd be willing to go out of my circumstances to pay for good work.

You misunderstood me.
I was asking exactly what country so we can recommend the best ereader. It does vary from country to country. Where do you find your books? That would also help. Lastly, ereaders can read pdfs but not very well. I know there are several places to find free ebooks. That I could have helped you with too. But since you want to be secretive, I really can't help. |

Precisely. As Cin says, you'll be helping other people to help you if you put your country in your MR profile. Device availability varies widely between countries, and you can help us to help you.

im from baltic states, im sure i can get my hands on kindle, kobo, sony and more and i'd want to be free of any obligations to be connected to wifi etc to be able to read / work with text etc, mostly pdf, i was hoping to hear from you guys about the highlight thing, i don't know about kobo and sony and ereaders in general, do their creators too (like kindle) expect them to be connected to wifi / their sources etc to be able to get apps like text highlight noting and dictionary. Maybe i have got it all wrong about ereaders, maybe i need android or what they call them, where you have like a small computer in phone. .
thanks |

Are you wanting to be able to read your highlights on just the device?
Or are you wanting them across several things? Android is an operating system for tablets and phones. Apple also has an operating system. They are like Windows or Linux on a computer. In all honesty, if you are a pdf guy, you really don't want an ereader. I have a couple of pdfs on my Kobo. It took me 5 tries to get the formatting where I could read the entire page. Note it was a list of my movies. The pdf ran many pages. |

i'd want to get the highlights on my personal computer afterwards, like when i read so i don't have to copy paste every highlight, i'd imagine something like highlighting while reading on ereader and after the book is read, i get all the highlights in one text document on my pc, i don't really know if thers something that works that way but there has to be right?
so its such a mess to format , i didn't know that. sorry, yes, i'll probably use lots of common book formats (i don't know what are the common formats yet but im gonna make sure the ereader can read them befor buying one, im sure i'll be able to find that out myself) . the thing that i can't manage to find on internet is question about let's say kobo . does it have built in dictionary or noting applications, if no then is it possible to get them and will they work if im not connected to wifi or account. i know kindle has them but the user needs to be connected to wifi or account approved something like that, if im not mistaken. I don't know about kobo or other ereaders. |

Yes,
The Kobo has a built in dictionary. No you do not need wifi to access the dictionary on either Kindle or Kobo. Now for highlights to sync across devices, yes you need wifi and you need to buy from the specific store or have them stored in the cloud at Amazon for a Kindle. Kobo doesn't have that feature. The common book format for Kobo is epub. The common book format for Kindle is Mobi. The problem with pdfs on an ereader is pdfs are fixed fonts (texts) whereas epub and mobi are reflowable text. |

For eink Kindles, all highlights are saved in a file called My Clippings.txt. This can be transferred to your pc, and you can cut and paste from it to your heart's content. Be aware that it is a FIFO file. If you are reading two books at the same time, the highlights will be in the file in the order you created them. I have seen, on this forum, mention of some apps to separate out the highlights for the various books. Google might help you find one of them.
