New reader for my wife, which one?
I have the Kobo Aura H2O.
It reads epub. I'm going to make some books for it, and my wife wants to read them on a device of her own, as I need mine for testing. It needs to have these 2 feats: 1- Front light, 2- Read Epub. ..and be cheap too... Preferably under $100. I know I don't want a Paperwhite, and I know I just missed Black Friday ![]() I was thinking of the Kobo GLO HD, but at $120 is a bit much. Any recommendations? |

I don't know of a cheap front lit.

The Glo HD is $99.99 CAD right now from Chapters in Canada. With the exchange rate that's somewhere around $78 US. I can't think of anything else unless you look at older used or refurb units maybe a Kobo Glo or Nook Glowlight (don't know how cheap they'd be).

Found an older nook glowlight (non hd) for $69 on rakuten.Rakuten site.
Even though the description says 60% more pixels, I think it might be off... Seems like I got the last one, because the deal is now closed! I hope they don't cancel. The HD will be for $129, but even if it only has 200ppi, I'll be glad if it reads epub and had a glow light! |

You should have gotten her an H2O or a Glo HD. But an old nook, you really don't love her. ![]() |

lol!
I don't know. It just needs to read epub, so unless it's really horrible at that, She just reads on it. Never had an ebook reader. Can't be that much worse than an old PRS-505, can it? I also have a 5" Bookeen reader I could give her, but the battery is a bit on the low side, and it doesn't have a glow light. It's a nice device, though small in size and pixels, but the glo light is necessary for night reading. I bet she'll be alright, if she can open the epub, and flip pages. |

It's true that the Nook Glowlight has partitioned memory but it still holds several hundred sideloaded books. That's plenty for most people.
The screen is the same size and resolution as my Paperwhite 2 and Kobo Glo (no HD) and I find both of those just fine to read with. Barry |

Overall, the reading experience is not as good as Sony or Kobo. So please don't give it to your wife. Get her a good Reader. One other thing I dislike about the nook is the feel. It's shape is just odd. I have a nook STR and it's the Reader I don't like to hold the most. |

Well,
The nook arrived, and I must say I'm well pleased with it! A pity, it was a used item, but regardless, I find it a splendid device! The text is pleasantly clear (at the resolution that it has), the glo light works very well, though lowest light mode is a bit too bright for night reading for me; but not a problem for my wife who loves the screen a bit brighter. The refresh rate is about the fastest I've seen before, The body has a nice rubber feel to it, which I find feels the nicest of all ereaders, so we disagree here! You probably don't know what feels bad, until you had to read from a metal e-reader, like the Sony PRS-505, with its cold metallic plastic, or the Jetbook color, weighing in about 4x the weight of current eReaders. The weight of the Nook is just perfect! Super light weight! Barnes and Noble has about 13k free ebooks in their store, where probably 1% or less is worth reading, but still! A bad device? I don't think so! I enjoy reading out of it as much as my H2O, despite the smaller screen. Last edited by ProDigit; 12-19-2015 at 09:37 AM. |
