Take the Sony PRS505 Poll: Did your e-ink screen break?

Please take the Sony PRS505 screen survey!

Hi, Teleread is trying to see how common it is for owners of e-ink devices to have their displays break. Note that this question is about the hardware problem of broken displays. It is not about software or firmware problems.

Note: The question is only for PRS 505 owners . We are trying to compare the results between similar devices. Having data from PRS 500 might skew our ability to compare results.

Can you answer this one survey question if you haven't already?
http://www.teleread.org/blog/2008/07...-screen-break/

Of course, this survey may have a self-selection bias. There's a good chance unhappy consumers will be more likely to complete this survey than those who are happy.

Therefore, in the interest of receiving accurate data, I would encourage all Sony PRS 505 owners to take the one question survey about whether you have experienced this problem.

Thanks for your help.

From what I am seeing for rsults it seems more Gen3s are having mysterieous screen breaks then the 505 or Kindle.

I think your results will be skewed, since people who have had screen breaks are a lot more likely to open this thread than those who have not had a screen break.

It is true that we may not get accurate 'absolute' failure rate due to self-selection bias you mentioned. However, if we assume users are equally likely to respond to such surveys regardless of their products (Sony Reader, Cybook, Kindle..), still the 'relative' failure rate may be meaningful.

But that's good. We want people who have had the screen break for no apparent reason to vote in the polls. It's nice to know if it could be an issue with the Vizplex screens or an issue with the devices such as plastic in the Gen3 vs the metal in the 505.

In fact it is for the very reason that I didn't have a screen break that I opened this thread up

I have a lanyard connected to my 505 which I always loop around my wrist to keep my Precious safe. Shaky morning hands the other day saw me propel my 505 onto the tiled kitchen floor. Stomach sank and I could feel the sting of tears rising.

I picked the unit up and all was well with the screen. The top left corner of the unit is now a bit loose and a sliver of the blue alloy has even peeled away but other than that everything is okay.

And I say again, I didn't drop it, I propelled it at the floor. I'm most relieved and happy with the resilience of the thing.

cheers

I had a slight accident with mine getting out a taxi the other day. When I was getting out of the taxi, somehow my PRS505 flew out of my purse and landed on the pavement. I was very worried after reading some horror stories about broken screens, but luckily when I turned it on, the screen was perfect. The bottom of the reader had bent a little where the volume toggle switch is, but that was all. I was able to straighten that out, and my reader is as good as new.

So far, I'm very happy with the quality of my reader--and I know I'm very lucky!
