Full backup/restore with dd or Win32DiskImager?

I've just read about the new firmware release and would like to try the new version, but also be able to go back to the current state of my device.

Is it possible to create a "full backup" of a Kobo Aura H2O by using tools like dd (Linux/Cygwin) or Win32DiskImager (Windows), and restoring the Kobo to the exact state it was in before the firmware update with these backups/images?

EDIT: should have added- "without taking out the internal SD-card (if that's at all possible on the H2O)". In the meantime I've found some threads mentioning imaging, but I'd like to verify that the backup/restore actually works in practice, on my device.

An image is overkill for this. Just take a copy of everything on the user partition. Then try the firmware. If you don't like it, do a factory reset, put the firmware you want to use on it and then restore the saved files. I do this all the time when I'm experimenting.

You can take a full backup with the Kobo Magic Memory Upgrade mod (external alternative)

Restoring it is quite a different pickle, though. Overwriting the internal bootloader, kernel is never entirely without risk. And usually when you need to do this the internal firmware is already shot and no longer able to perform such tasks.

For firmware upgrade backup purposes, unless you have installed a ton of mods(?), it should be sufficient to just save the files themselves over USB connection. That way you can factory reset, upgrade to desired firmware version, restore your files and database and done.

Thanks for the info guys! I wasn't sure if a file-based backup is sufficient, looks like I'm good (; .
