The Cache files in calibre

Hi I am using calibre portable in dropbox with calibre companion. I sync 3 devices with calibre and for each device a 60-70mb cache file is generated in calibre cache. Is it possible to save these files in some other location outside of Dropbox.

Can't you tell Dropbox not to synch the cache directory.

See also ===>>> Environment variables

But I'm not sure if CALIBRE_CACHE_DIRECTORY will work with portable, which by definition is self contained.

Yes thats why I mentioned that I am using portable have to find where Kovid has defined environment variables for portable are they inside the portable launcher itself then it wont be possible. The main calibre install is the same so I am able to use calibre 64bit with the portable launcher.

No, not with calibre portable. The ENV variable has no effect, and there is no CC option to move it.

However, you should be able to avoid the problem by making a link (a "junction") in the dropbox folder that points the cache somewhere outside dropbox. I just tried it and dropbox doesn't follow the junction. I didn't try it with calibre because I don't use portable.

Do note that if you move the cache outside of dropbox then connects using calibre portable on a different computer will upload all the metadata to refresh calibre's cache.

I think that's one of the main things the launcher does - set the environment variables to locations inside the portable directory. That's why I qualified my suggestion.

But I ask again - Can't you tell Dropbox not to synch the cache directory. I don't use it, but most sync systems have exclusion capabilities.

As far as I can tell everything inside the Dropbox folder is synced unselecting it removes the folder from the computer. Hmm maybe I should let Dropbox remove the folder then copy it back again to see if it remains unsynced something to try .
@chaley I only use calibre companion with one pc only so what you are suggesting should not be a problem.
Will try both options if nothing works then I can always go back to starting calibre the old fashioned way before kovid introduced the portable installer.

@Dopedangel : If the junction trick doesn't work out (I was going to suggest a symlink, but dropbox may follow them), try a using a file sync tool that a) gives user control over what gets synced and what doesn't, and b) interoperates with cloud service providers.

Goodsync can do it, I use it to selectively sync to my FTP service provider. Not free, but nor is my FTP service provider - 25+ years of trouble free service earns loyalty.

Also I would have thought this thread belongs in the calibre forum, rather than here, given its primarily about calibre portable.

Unselecting the folder in dropbox and then copying it back worked. The cache folder no longer syncs with dropbox.
