Unhappy There goes the screen...

I expected the official sleep cover to be tougher than this.

I left my Aura HD in my library bag on the ground and I forgot it was in there.

I accidentally stepped on the bag, thinking nothing was in the bag.

Then I hear a snap.

There are no cracks on the screen, but the screen is all messed up. One quarter of the screen is unreadable. Doing a soft reset and hard reset doesn't fix it.

For now, I have to use my old Kobo Glo.

The Aura HD is over 2 years old, I don't think the warranty is cover anymore.

Are there any repair/RMA options left or do I have purchase a new replacement?

I believe you will have to buy a new device.

I don't think any type of case would have protected any eink device's screen from being stepped on.

Theoretically, you could replace the screen. In practice, I'd recommend getting a new machine.

The cracks are in the substrate layer beneath the screen. Any flexing or bending will crack the substrate, but I'm actually surprised that you didn't also crack the topmost screen layer. And I agree with booklover6, I don't think any cover could protect any reader from being stepped on.

Screens aren't available to purchase for replacement, so getting a new reader is your only choice.

I know in the past some people have made a cover by hollowing out a real book and placing the reader inside that. I would think that might be sufficient protection to allow the device to survive being stepped on.

Doesn't that kind of defeat at least one of the purposes of an ereader, if you've got to haul around a real, if hollow, book?

To the OP: I think you've got to file this under "Stuff Happens." At least you got over two years' worth of use out of your gadget before it went to the recycling center in the sky.

I have seen Pelican Cases for Apple tablets and kindle voyager offering great in storage protection that might have prevented this damage. But only protect when it is stored in this case. You did not place it in safe place and likely would not have been in pelican case.

Walmart stores stock similar lower priced case.

The chances of stepping on a Reader is very slim. This is actually the first time I've ever read of such happening.

RZetlin, as for your broken Aura HD, it's a write-off. The warranty doesn't cover user damage. You'd be best off buying an Aura H2O. But one thing you can do is to open the the HD since it is broken and remove the SD card so you recover the books on the SD card.

The SD Card is already out. Most of my books are in Calibre, so no books were lost.

I will probably till next year for the new Kobo models to come out. I am really hoping for an 8 inch reader.

If you think a Library bag is stronger than your foot....well, now you know the answer.

You've broken the substrate, and probably some delicate electronic parts.

Depends, a single hardcover is still easier to carry than all the books you own. And if you were carrying it in a bag for day to day use, then you aren't giving up much space.

That said I wouldn't do it, but I generally keep my H2O in a jacket pocket.
