The Bluffer's Guide to Rugby by Steven Gauge is the football-themed installment in the intensely funny satirically-written-but-seriously-informative Bluffer's Guides, free courtesy of the eponymous imprint of publisher Hammersley House.
Long ago, I picked up a stack of these from a bookstore's close-out sale, and they're consistently quite humorous yet also solid introductions to the basics and some of the finer points of whatever field they cover and highly edutaining, even for subjects I'm not particularly interested in (perhaps especially for subjects I'm not particularly interested in). So I'm very pleased whenever the sporadic e-book freebies show up, as well as the sibling Xenophobe's Guide To series about various countries. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK). And this has been the (late!) selected 3rd (non-repeat… ish) free ebook thread of the day. Because getting another installment in an edutaining series I've thoroughly enjoyed and even somewhat learned from over the years is always a doubleplus good reason for the dance of joy. ![]() ![]() Enjoy! Description Instantly acquire all the knowledge you need to pass as an expert in the world of rugby. Know what to say, what not to say, what to do in the company of rugby fans, and what excuses to make when the drinking games start. On the field of play never again confuse a Garryowen with a grubber, a blindside with an eye-gouge, or a spear tackle with a turnover. Bask in the admiration of your fellow rugby lovers as you pronounce confidently on the chances of your team trouncing the opposition, impress them with your seemingly extensive knowledge of rules and tactics, and make sure that you're well versed in the difference between the two codes of rugby league and rugby union. Above all know that the origins of the game lie in a blatant display of cheating. |
