Goodreads 2015 Year-End Summary

Recently Goodreads emailed us a link to our 2015 summary. Nice presentation.

However, one stat I didn't like was my 2.90 average rating of 27 titles. Did I really not enjoy much of what I read?

In any case, I'll try to do better in my reading selections for 2016.

How did you do overall this year?

Hi. My average rating for 2015 was 3.6. I liked this average. What I liked more was the average length book I've recorded, which is 413 pages. I don't like reading too many 200 paged books because you get in a mindset, wanting to read the most number of books just for its sake.

A couple of years ago, I calculated my GR reading average for myself and it also was 2.9, which I similarly found unsettling. I didn't bother last year, and I was pleased to see that this year I'm at 3.3, which seems quite good. Five stars is a very rare rating for me, so given that three stars is my baseline rating, it means I had to have quite a few four-star reads (which is pretty terrific in my system) to more than offset the 20 two-star ratings I just counted up. And at least some of those can be accounted for by my ongoing challenge to read all of Wodehouse chronologically, as early Wodehouse isn't all that good, as it happens. I'll get a bump from this in itself next year, as I've got to where Sir Plum is hitting his stride.

I had only two one-star ratings and one of them was a Wodehouse (The Swoop! or How Clarence Saved England for the curious), which I take to mean that my filtering system is reasonably good or that I'm quicker to abandon bad reads, most likely both. The toughest part of GR ratings for me is that a three-star rating covers a lot of ground, from barely adequate with no major flaws to really quite good. I know some would like to see the ratings system expanded to include half stars. I prefer it this way, but I acknowledge that some illuminating granularity is lost for me at the three-star level.

I'm glad this was brought up, as I think I'll try to keep an eye on my average rating and see if I can do slightly better next year.

Mine says the most popular book I read was The Diary of Anne Frank.

My average rating for the year is 4.2

Average book length 302 pages.

309 books, 82,479 pages!

My average rating from 85 books was 2.9 too, but that is, in part, because I have become less reluctant to accept a book is a duffer, stop reading it and give it a 1 rating.

My most popular read was "The Martian" (though others enjoyed it far more than I).

My favourite read this year so far is "Strange Weather in Tokyo", which made me laugh and cry.

Doing the math myself my average rating this year appears to be 3.6. Given that I don't usually give 1s my average is really (5+2)/2 or 3.5 for an average. That's right around the 3.5 I would expect for that mathematical reason. I am pretty careful in my reading selection process. I did read a lot of spectacular books this year. 8 books got 5 stars this year. I blame Canada, 4 of them from 14 Canadian reads. Maybe I just love my country.

I'd say my most popular book (looking at GR average rating and number of reviews) would have been Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. Just based on number of reviews it would be The Road by Cormac McCarthy (one of my five-star reads this year.)

I don't count abandoned books among my read books, so they didn't pull my rating down. I do rate them; books that bad deserve poor ratings.

I didn't get the email either, but there are links on various GR pages. One way to find the link to your own is to look at someone else's year in review. That's how I discovered mine. There are a few other interesting tidbits in the display. My longest book was The Power Broker. I knew that!

I did think the summary was informative. I liked the most and least popular reads. Very interesting.

The amount of data GR (and Amazon) has available in mind boggling.

Nice one. I was disappointed that my least popular book had a staggering 5 reads on Goodreads. I must do better next year as I'm getting downright mainstream in my reading.
