Thumbs up Free (DRM-free) Red Tide by Larry Niven [Sci-Fi Teleportation Consequences Drama]

Red Tide by Nebula & Hugo Award-winner Larry Niven (ISFDB, IMDB, Wikipedia) with Brad Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington is a newly-written expansion of ideas from Niven's 1973 science fiction novella Flash Crowd, exploring the consequences of instantaneous transportation, with a new introduction by the author and with two additional shorts by the junior authors set in the same universe, as part of the Stellar Guild series pairing established and newer writers, free courtesy of publisher Phoenix Pick Press.

This is their featured Free Book of the Month for December, and is accompanied by not only a bundle deal for a classic Niven short story collection, but also another deal for additional classic reprints of science fiction grand master Robert A. Heinlein's works as well.

Currently free throughout December directly @ the publisher's dedicated promo page (DRM-free ePub/Mobi bundle available worldwide).

The 1st additional bundle deal @ $4.99 is for Niven's vintage short story collection, Limits, originally out from Del Rey in 1981.

The 2nd additional bundle deal @ $9.99 includes Limits, and adds Robert A. Heinlein's two classic novels: Podkayne of Mars with the restored author's preferred ending, and the Hugo Award-winning Double Star. This works out to just $3.33 for each book.

The 3rd additional bundle deal @ $15.99 includes the 1 freebie + 1 collection + 2 novels above, and furthermore adds Robert A. Heinlein's story and essay collection Expanded Universe, now reprinted in 2 volumes, the 1st part of which was a freebie in October. However, if you missed that or didn't purchase the 2nd part in the tie-in deal then, it's still a good price, working out to $4 per new book, or $3.20 if you missed EU vol. 1 earlier.

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day.

Because even though I admit I haven't been too impressed by what little I've read of Niven's writing, it's certainly nice to be offered some classic work from a much-awarded and significant author in the genre, and even moreso to receive a bundle deal not only for another of his books, but also some vintage classic Heinlein as well, which is among some of the best-known and beloved of his work.

Enjoy!

Description
Larry Niven is one of the true giants in the field of science fiction; winner of many of the genre s awards (multiple times) and the author of such works as Ringworld and (with Jerry Pournelle), The Mote in God's Eye and Lucifer s Hammer. He is also the creator and editor of the Man-Kzin anthologies, the first of which was published in 1988 and is currently on its fifteenth edition.

Brad R. Torgersen, a winner of the Writers of the Future contest, has received nominations for both the Hugo and Nebula awards as well as being on the Campbell ballot. His 2010 novelette, Outbound, won theAnalog readers poll.

Matthew J. Harrington has worked with Larry Niven on a number of projects including the Man-Kzin War books and The Goliath Ston, .

Loosely based on Larry Niven s 1973 novella "Flash Crowd," Red Tide continues to examine the social consequences of the impact of having instantaneous teleportation, where humans can instantly travel long distances in milliseconds.

This is a theme that has fascinated the author throughout his career and even appears in his seminal work Ringworld, where the central character celebrates his birthday by instantly teleporting himself to different time zones, extending his birthday. The author also discusses the impact of such instantaneous transportation in his essay, "Exercise in Speculation: The Theory and Practice of Teleportation."

Larry Niven is joined by two younger writers, Brad R. Torgersen and Matthew J. Harrington, as they take on this challenging idea and further develop the theories and concepts that Niven originally presented in "Flash Crowd."

Just a reminder that this is probably the last day to get this freebie, or purchase one of the discounted tie-in bundles, if you haven't already.

For the Phoenix Pick freebie, change the amount to 0 and update the cart. The paypal button should change to just a checkout button.
