Converting from ePub to Kindle

I design ebooks in ePub format, and in the past have used calibre to convert the ePub file to AZW3 so that it can be read on Kindles.

Last night when I converted an ePub to AZW3 the operation seemed to go as usual, and the output file is in AZW3 format. But the icon for the file is the calibre icon instead of the mobi icon, and when I click on the file it opens in calibre instead of as a mobi file. I haven't seen this before; previous azw3 files have shown the kindle icon and opened in the desktop Kindle reader.

What am I doing wrong? Have I missed an announcement somewhere?

I converted the same ePub file to mobi with calibre, double clicked on it, and it opened in my desktop Kindle reader. Will this mobi file work in the later Kindle ereaders?

PS I update calibre every time an update becomes available.

Somewhere along the way AZW3 became associated with Calibre instead of K4PC (I recently had this happen to .prc files after a recent Calibre update).

You don't say what OS you're running, but for Windows, right click on an AZW3 and select properties. Towards the top of the window where is says "opens with" click change and browse to the K4PC exe file.

Thanks for your help, Brian. I thought after I posted that it might have something to do with my recent 'upgrade' from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Anyway, I'll follow your advice.
