Replacement for Nokia 770

I've used a Nokia 770 with FBReader for years and love the thing, but is there a comparable device available? Something shirt pocket sized?

Small enough for one hand with one hand button placement
Backlit with font sizing
Epub & PDF formats
SD card capable with computer connectivity

In other words, size and features similar to the Nokia.

I'd say look for a cheap Android Phone. If I read it correctly, the Nokia is about 4", so something like the Samsung Galaxy J1 should be about the same size. If you use Android, you can install apps which will allow you to use the volume buttons for paging. And it has a microSD card slot (normal sized SD card slots are almost never found anymore)

I used an N800 & FBReader for a while before getting an Cybook Gen3, and I agree with Sweetpea: get a cheap Android phone. It has the same or better specs than your 770, and FBReader will run on it.

Searching on the internet about this is confusing.
Can I buy an android phone and use it unactivated and transfer books from my PC?
Can you load ebook apps onto the phone from a PC, as the phone would not be activated? Or can an unactivated phone use wifi to do this?

Yes, you can use WiFi on unactivated devices and cloud services as well. In addition you can use USB to move files around. I use an unactivated Windows phone a lot for a portable GPS, eBook reader and lots more.

Presuming with "unactivated" phone, you mean a phone without a simcard, yes, you can. It would simply act like any old-school PDA. You will be able to connect to a local wifi, and go to the app store. You won't need to use a PC to load ebook apps on the device, but you'll be able to use the onboard app store. You could connect it to your PC as well, but I personally prefer to use wifi, no messing around with usb cables!

Have you try the Sony Xperia? It is rather small shirt pocket sized mobile and I guess you will be able to use FBreader.

Afraid this is out of my budget for a dedicated ebook reader.

Does anyone here use a smartphone as a reader? Need to find something economical. (Cheap)

Thanks.

Found another Nokia 770 for FBReader on Ebay for $14. Now that is cheap for a very good ebook reader.

Yes, you can use it unactivated. It doesn't need activation unless you want to use the cellular connection.

I've got a Boost Mobile LG Volt which I bought last year on "Black Friday" for $30 and which has never been activated with the carrier. I use it more for music & audiobooks, but it's registered to a Google Play account which gives it access to all of the apps offered there, including Calibre Companion and dozens of reader apps.
