ADE and New Pc

Hi guys

Quick question am getting a new PC and will need to reinstall ADE on it.

In preparation I have made a back up of the My Digital Editions folder and stored on my cloud storage.

What other preparations do I need?

In regards to putting books back into ADE is it just drag from back up to new ADE my digital editions folder after install and then drag to ADE on itself?

All help greatly appreciated

Not really, no. Adobe Digital Editions stores the decryption info in the registry.

You will have to sign in again with the same Adobe ID you used on the old computer.
Note: Once you do that, you can also just re-download all your books from the store you purchased them from.

But as long as you are registered with the same Adobe ID, the backed-up copies of the books should also work.

...

Personally, I find it much easier to DeDRM with Apprentice Alf's tools: https://apprenticealf.wordpress.com
Then I don't have to worry about books getting lost.

For a given value of "hassle".

I would put my books in calibre anyway, if only to fix the metadata and add series info.
Once you are putting books into calibre, Alf's tools will handle everything transparently, no hassle at all.

Yes, once you have the EPUB that you can read in ADE, you can simply import the book into calibre like normal.
See Apprentice Alf's blog for instructions on setting up, it's pretty simple.

Unfortunately, per the forum guidelines (rule #8), we cannot discuss the specifics of DRM removal, beyond pointing toward Alf's blog.
Fortunately, we can tell you where to find his blog, which explains it pretty well.

And of course you can forgo that altogether, and keep track of yet another account (Adobe ID), which if you ever forget or lose control of means you lose all your books.

One more piece of software which you must keep installed just to read your books.

Calibre or your PC can store DRM infested books without issue. (As a file server)

You only need to use a matching, registered ADE to READ or retrieve a new purchase book on that PC.

ALF is your friend, especially if you have need of 6+ recent devices

I must have about $6000 in ebooks right now. I can't imagine not cleaning them and backing them up in multiple locations, just in case. Amazon has been good about storing and I don't think they've lost any of my purchases, but I have heard some say it has happened to some of their purchases. And so far I'm fine with their readers but some time in the future I might want one from someone else. It's so easy and quick to clean them and put them into Calibre and back them up at the same time I backup the rest of my documents that I can't see not doing it. For the same reason I back up my account numbers and passwords to keep access to things I value.

You don't need to redownload or de-DRM your books. The key is to to make sure you use the same user id and password for ADE on the new computer as you used on the old computer.

Yes, you come put your books from your cloud backup back into the new Digital Editions folder. Then you can drag them from that folder to ADE. They will import and then you can read them just fine.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy your new computer!

But, did it work?

If you have ADE, Calibre and the plugin installed correctly, you'd just need to import the DRM-ed books into Calibre and then wait.

If you want an un-DRM-ed version outside of Calibre, then just run "Save to Disk".

I think I must have about 10 Adobe accounts. I find it too much hassle to try to remember my ADE id. I just download a book, clean it through Calibre and then maybe I'll remember that ID when I need it again...

Thanks for information.

Unfortunately, if you've forgotten your password you will have to change it and theat creates a whole new problem as now I can't authorize my Nook on ADE or get Nook Study to work.

I really hate the my old computer is dying!

Trice
