I've shelved my Kindle for my iPad
I used to be fairly loyal to e-ink. Actually very loyal, as in the idea of LCD leisure reading was distasteful. A few months ago I was a given an iPad Mini (2, I think) for work and I just looked up and realized my Kindle is on a shelf with a layer of dust and a dead battery.
It wasn't deliberate. I just carry the iPad around for work and so began throwing books on it for convenience, not to replace the Kindle(4). Next thing ya know I'm doing all my reading on it. I use a pair of amber computer-reading glasses and like the effect. I still prefer e-ink, second to paper, and this was likely temporary while the iPad is a novelty, but it's not as bad as I previously felt, especially with a matte screen protector and some creative Marvin coloring. Also I recently began to understand why people like Proust. Or why I do. Just some Sunday rambling. Hope everyone is well. Really, I mean that. Also I really love energy drinks. I think I may be able to move the can with my mind if I try hard enough. |

Hmm, I'm the opposite. Just started using my husband's kindle paperwhite as he ditched it for a iPad mini 2. I just like the size and readability of the kindle as sometimes I read outside and at bedtime. The display isn't as bright at night so it doesn't bother my husband.

You're going to want to keep that battery charged if you want anyone to be able to use it in the future.

My longest surviving friend had a Kindle; I recently
gave him a load of ebooks, and he loaded them onto his Hudl Tablet to transport them to his home. He has since started to read them, on his Tablet and never bothered to transfer them to his Kindle. He says he actually prefers to read them this way,but at the cost of more frequent battery recharging! I guess I would read on my own tablet, if it were the only option, but generally, I prefer my Sony Reader (or of course, a REAL book!) |

@otterbooks, can you tell me about the 'amber computer glasses'. Are they tinted amber for a particular reason? And what is the tint formula or name, or whatever.
I find reading on a sandstone type coloured background is far better for me than the grey or off white base colour of the Kobo's. |

I read fiction on my Kindle Voyage; PDFs on my iPad. It's a case of using the right tool for the job. For reading outside in direct sunlight, though, the Kindle in enormously better. It's not at all good for PDFs.

Having watched my wife transition from my venerable Kindle KB 3G (broken screen) to the new $49 Fire tablet, I think that for normal reading indoors most people don't care what the device is. The Fire just goes on the table with the other devices to be charged overnight. An added benefit is that you can browse the internet (over WiFi) without changing devices.
She had a choice of course. I offered to 1. pay $43 for a new Kindle screen and try to fix the old device 2. get the latest paper-white Kindle 3. get the Fire (any of them.) Personally, I still do most of my reading on whatever computer I happen to be on. (It's just the way I roll.) Last edited by frahse; 10-13-2015 at 01:58 PM. |

Oh the horrors of reading on "an lcd". Why 20 years ago I read a book on an over bright computer monitor and it fried my eyes...so now I believe every "science" study with 15 subjects that "prove" there is some magical difference between light that bounces off paper and light that goes direct into your eyes. You hear that?! DIRECT INTO YOUR EYES.
So it's eInk or paper for me. If I were to buy a tablet, I'd never be able to concentrate because of the movies and the twitters and the face books and everything that people with tablets spend their time on. |

Well I shelved my Nexus 7 2013 for my Kindle voyage. And I will never go back to reading on a LCD screen again.

It's the opposite for me. Reading on eInk causes eye strain for me due to unevenness of screen. While I can read on my tablets just fine. I kept them at minimum brightness most of the time unless in a brightly lit setting.
