Footnotes

I noticed, while looking at a couple of reference EPUB books in the Calibre e-book reader, that when I clicked on a footnote, instead of going to the link in the main viewing window, it opened a box at the bottom of the viewer. I thought this was a neat trick, but when I checked out the stylesheet, I didn't see anything unusual to do this. Anyone know how to do this? I'd like to incorporate the technique in some of my own EPUBs.

It's smarts in the calibre e-book reader. The release notes when this was added to calibre are:
Quote:
Now when you click on a link to a footnote/endnote, the corresponding note is shown in a separate popup window, for convenient reference. Footnote links are recognized using the EPUB 3 footnote markup as well as some heuristics. Any superscript or subscript links are assumed to be footnote links. Any link that links to another file which in turn links back to the original link, is assumed to be an endnote.
I don't know if it is worthwhile adding the epub3 markup as I don't know if any other ereader app that will use them.

Ok, so the epub3 markup isn't used by most apps, but this can definitely be done with Amazon books, and I thought I had seen it in kepubs as well. (I could be wrong about the kepubs--the last few books I've read with footnotes have been on my Voyage)
Goroke, if you're interested in learning how to create footnotes that "pop up" in Kindle books, there is a whole thread devoted to that: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=249033

Shari

edit to add: I just double-checked on my kobo, and kepubs do this as well. I'm not sure if it's something that is added automatically when the conversion is done or not--the book I checked was originally a Kf8 file from Amazon that had the pop-up footnotes already.

The two books in question that I have seen this in are The Annotated Alice and The ESV Study Bible. I don't see anything about the coding of the links to or from the footnotes. Clicking on a footnote link opens a new window using maybe a quarter of the total window at the bottom. I just can't figure out what is different about these two EPUBs that causes this when none of the others do it...

In the current Kindle firmware, footnotes no longer "pop up", but are displayed as genuine footnotes at the bottom of the screen, as in a printed book.

I hadn't even noticed that! Thanks for pointing it out.
