Calibre can't see iPhone

Calibre 2.41 on Win 7/64 pc
iPhone 4, iOS 7.1.2
also Android reader

It's been some time (over a year?) since I plugged in my iPhone to add a few new books from Calibre.

Today, Calibre does not recognize the iphone when it's plugged in. Marvin loads from the iPhone screen.

The Marvin app shows a 3 which I'm told means 3 new books, but I have no idea how they could have arrived, especially since Calibre can't see the iphone.

Ideas?
