Just bought a Kobo Aura H2O

Hello,

I just retired my old Sony T1 and replaced it with a Kobo Aura H2O.
I have jus two questions:
1) Is there a way to turn the display in landscape mode (like on my old Sony T1)?
2) The Kobo fails to render properly text inside gray boxes unless the minimum font size is selected (this is quite annoying)

Is it possible to fix these problems?

Cheers
Luca

p.s. Here is a picture of the box. At higher font sizes the box is empty

No, the Kobo firmware does not have a landscape mode for epubs. You can rotate PDFs and images.

I haven't seen that one. I have had coloured boxes with test in them show up. It might be something in the coding of the book.

Alternative reader software (Coolreader, Koreader, ...) might support landscape mode. The official firmware does not, although in a pinch you could generate a landscape PDF with your preferred font settings.

there was a rumour about CSS epub-writing-mode vertical-rl putting kepub into landscape mode but I don't know if that works https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...44#post2341644

Difficult to say. The box is rendering correctly with iBooks on my iPad at all font sizes (even very large). So I suspect it my be somethings related to Kobo's original firmware

Can you point out a guide for installing alternative reader software?

Just because a book works correctly on iBooks does not mean it will work correctly with any other device; Apple is well known for not following standards.

Ivicini - here's the link to the Kobo Discounts thread:https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=115233

I don't know if you've been ebook shopping much at Kobo before, but you'll get the books a lot cheaper using the coupons that find their way into that thread. And also be able to find out how to enter the Kobo monthly Contest. More info in that thread ....

And unfortunately, there is no way to check that without seeing the book. As PeterT said, iBooks, is well know for not following standards. What you are seeing could be a bug in the firmware, or, it could be the book code is doing something it shouldn't.

If the book is somewhere we can see it, then post a link. Even if we can just get to a sample, that might help work out what is wrong.

By the way, the book renders perfectly on my old Sony T1
I checked the book with Calibre in the ePub editor, and it looks like there are CSS errors. A closer look is showing that these are media query errors

@media amzn-kf8

Calibre doesn't recognise amzn-kf8 but in any case this shouldn't affect the Kobo H2O.

The book has been purchased directly in the Wiley online bookshop.
I can strip away the rest of the book leaving only the page with the rendering problem. Is there a way could make it accessible to everyone interested on mobile read?

Latest update. I converted the ePub file to Kepub, and it now renders perfectly.
I still believe it's a problem with the Kobo original ePub reader application.

Before you blame RMDSK, validate the ePub with both epubcheck 4 and Calibre's eBook editor. It could very well be a technical error with the ePub.

That's interesting as the Sony and the epub reader on a Kobo uses the RMSDK. But, the Kobo is using a much newer version. I would have hoped that fixed a problem like this rather than created it.

Yes, these should be ignored.

You can attach an epub here if it doesn't break copyright. If you stripped it to one page, you might be OK on "fair use" rules. But, you cold also replace the text with something else. And I feel I have seen a plugin or tool that randomises the text in an epub for just this sort of thing.
