Tooltip Hover time

Has there been a recent change that has reset the time before a tooltip is displayed - mine's gone from a second or three to practically instantaneous.

There's one particular situation where its driving me nuts -- where I have links to local images embedded in long text column, which has an icon with no text. If the mouse pointer gets close to the icon for a fraction of a second the images flash up, and if they're big they momentarily obliterate everything.

I know I can turn tooltips off in Preferences->Look and feel - but I like having them, and I don't mind waiting a second or three.

One could argue that cells that have an 'icon with no text' displayed, should not display the cell value in the tooltip. But I'd be happy if I could get back to a longer delay before cell tooltips are displayed.

If I turn them off then my wait times are likewise never ending

I thought there was a tweak, but I confused calibre with my file mangler.

By infinite, I mean they show until I move my Mouse OFF the item

But London to brick on, you don't have long text cells, hiding behind column icons, that have links to A3 images

But you're right on 'normal' cells the tooltip is there as long as the pointer hovers. It used to be that I would have to wait a second or two for a cell tooltip to display, but now they're there immediately. The image popping/flashing used to only happen occasionally and intermittently how it happens all the time and almost continuously.

Not that I know of. The delay before tooltips are shown is controlled by Qt and as far as I know there is no way for application code to change it. And at least on my linux system, the delay remain ~ 1.5 secs.

On Windows 10 the book list cell tooltips are popping up instantly, I think there used to be a delay, but normally instant would be no bad thing.

However when its a 24mp image... here's an illustration (720x1024px) on a 1920 x 1280 monitor... everything get hidden by the tooltip :lol:

On my windows 10 machine, there remains a delay. I think what you are getting confused by, is that once the first tooltip has popped up, moving the mouse to another cell cause the tooltip for the new cell to be displayed instantly. As far as I know, that has always been the case.

Until now I'd not detected that subtlety.

Maybe my mouse parking valet (CursorHider) isn't working as it should on Windows 10. I'll check that out.

I think I've figured it out - with a textual cell (e.g. author name) the tooltip will continue to display as long as the mouse hovers.

But with a long text column that contains multiple links to large images the first image is displayed for about half a second, then the second one for about half a second, and so on. It has nothing to do with the icon or my mouse pointer valet because I tried removing both.

But something has changed - not sure when. In version 1.48 when I hover the mouse pointer over the cell where I have the Kris Swindle image, that you can see my earlier post, I see this:-



IMO that's adequate as a tooltip for something that contains image links (the two white squares). In my case the images are local links (file:///blah blah) so they're fast, but if they were web links (http://blah blah) then... zzz.

I'm guessing this a Qt issue - and that it could go back as far as the change to version 5. Of late I've been doing some 'work' on the library where I have lots of embedded links to large images so the 'tooltip image popups' are particularly irritating - I can workaround by disabling the tooltips when working on that library.
