Kobo Touch keeps freezing randomly after last update

Hi guys!

I have a Kobo Touch device (N905B) that I've been using for a long time without any issues.

That is, until it updated to firmware 3.18.0.
From that moment on, it now randomly freezes during normal use (can happen anytime, while reading or simply in a menu) and the only way to make it work again is to hold the power switch for ~10 seconds to force it to switch off and then turn it on again.

I tried doing a complete factory reset, but the problem is that after a reset it needs to be activated again, and during activation it re-updates to firmware 3.18.0 and the problem persists.

Is there any way to fix this?
Or, alternatively, is there any way to downgrade it to the previous version, which didn't give me any issues?

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

What was your previous version.? If you have desired previous version install it just like you manually installed your 3.18.0 verzion. Might be link for it in thread at Kobo developer's corner forum on this site or someone will provide a link.

After a factory reset, it will always download the latest firmware during the setup. But, you can stop this if you use the Kobo desktop application to do the set-up. When doing this, you let the application do the setup and before ejecting the device, replace the firmware updates files with the files for the version you want to use. Or you can remove them completely and use the factory firmware (1.9.11 is so strange now).

You can usually download to a recent firmware safely, but, I think with the problems you are having, the factory reset is a good idea. The real question is what version you want to use. If it is 3.17.3, a few people have done this and it seems safe. But, if you are going further back, the above method is recommended.

Thanks a lot for the info.

Unfortunately, I don't know what version I was on, since I usually never connect it to the internet, to save battery life. I doubt it was the second-to-last, probably older.
I don't really care which one I install, as long as it doesn't freeze while using. I never noticed any differences between versions anyway.

Can you guys recommend a good version?
Plus, is there a more detailed tutorial on how to downgrade? Basically I have to swap the update package while the desktop tool is updating? Seems risky... did anyone write a step-by-step tutorial?

You can sideload a FW, download from here, and follow the Installation Instructions for Direct Zip Files.

You don't must do Factory Reset if going to a previous version, but if you do copy the books and KoboReader.sqlite first.

Thanks I will try the 3.11.0 release, will let you know how it goes.

Don't need to backup if I don't want to keep the books? I don't keep many at any one time on the device anyway.
