finding books on device when connected via usb

My device shows up in calibre but it takes about 10 minutes to show the books on the device as it searched through my 80gb music collection first every time.
Is there any way to point it directly to the folder on the external card so it only searches the books folder and not the whole 128GB card?

well that speeded things up but it still took 4 minutes 12 seconds, down from about 12, to update. Is that about normal for 600+ books?

thanks

ps

it finds a few books for about 8 seconds and then stops with

found object and the book name.
the progress is unavailable
and the timer is running
then it got to about 4 minutes and the progress bar shot across

No it shouldnt take more that a few seconds to list a few hundred files. Make sure you have selected onlya single folder with your book sin it to scan. And if you run calibre in debug mode (right clicking the preferences btton) then you will get much more information about what it is doing in the debug log.

I have only selected a single folder on my sd card. As I said previously it seems to hang for a while on a single book, then it either waits for about 4 minutes and does it or waits for 4 minutes or so and then the progress bar creeps across over about 30 seconds or more
I will try the debug mode and post the log as it probably wont mean much to me

possibly the SD card is getting ready to fail. you may want to invest NOW in a backup while you continue to troubleshoot.

if you do other stuff on the SD card, like running a file manager and having it count files and folders- does that give immediate answers ( it should) or is that having slowdowns
