Books marked "Personal" and the [PDOC] tag
I recently picked up a Kindle Voyage, after the untimely death of my early-gen Kindle. While I love it, I kind of hate the little white "Personal" bar that shows up on many of the ebooks that I loaded in through Calibre. No problem, a quick google told me that all I need to do is remove the [PDOC] tag by reconverting the books. So I did that, and it worked. No more Personal bar! ...but the books are unopenable. Clearly this situation is worse than just having the little white bar. But does anyone know an alternate way to fix this problem? Apparently Calibre's converter is breaking my books, so is there a way to just edit the tag without converting?

Change [PDOC] to [EBOK] in the Output specifications, do not remove it entirely. This identifies it as an Kindle format ebook.

Sorry I wasn't clear, I've attempted both ways. Either one results in the Kindle refusing to open the converted book.

This is a well-known issue. For more information, see this post by eschwartz.
You can fix it with the Quality Check Calibre plugin. (Select Fix ASIN for Kindle Fire.) |

That works, thanks! Not sure why that thread didn't come up on my search, instead of less helpful ones.

Good to hear you were able to fix things.
But I kind of wonder why you ended up with unreadable files... I'd expect them to just stubbornly keep the Personal banner. ![]() |
