Aura HD Hi Folks!

Hi!
On my Aura HD, firmware 3.17.3, I get really funny stuff instead of quotation marks in some EPUB files.
Looks like: µ, Ø, Ұ,
Checking the files on pc or in Calibre looks normal..
Anybody ideas or tips?

Which font are you using? Does the problem go away if you change fonts?

Hi Geoff
I tried on your advice.
In different fonts I get different faulty characters..

It sounds like the book has a faulty character encoding.

If you have Calibre, there is a very useful plugin called "Modify ePub" which has an option to "Encode HTML in UTF-8".

I would try deleting the old book from the device, use the above option in Calibre, and reload the book to the device to see if that fixes it.

Hi Folks!
I did a bit of experimenting, and uploaded the original txt to my kobo, without using Calibre. No problem. Somehow it's in the conversion module or in the way kobo treats the converted file. Which is both off topic, so we can close this thred with many thanks for yr help!

Unless you are using the KoboTouchExtended driver to send the books as kepubs, calibre does not touch the text of an epub when it is sent. And I didn't think the extended driver would do this. Are you doing some other conversion before sending the book? Is there a chance of seeing a book that this happens with?

Hi David
I generally use Calibre to convert anything to EPUB, because I like to have just one format about.
In this case it was a clean textfile (I checked).
I attached a zipfile containing both versions.
Enjoy. (The story as well, by the way, it's one of my favorites)

When you say "checking the files on PC", I assume you mean you check the input text file, and not the resulting converted epub file.

The problem with your sample text file can be fixed by specifying Input Character Encoding: cp1252 in the "Look and Feel" dialogue of the Calibre Convert options.

edvan: What rashkae said is the solution. But, when I opened the epub version you posted in the calibre viewer, there were no quotes, em-dashes and similar characters. While it looked OK, it was missing information that would have made the book hard to read.

Also, this looks like a book that would be under copyright. You should not post this. In the future, we can arrange another way to get the book. It would be a good idea to remove this book now before a moderator wanders by.

The text is copyrighted, but I am in no way wanting to distribute it!
I live in the Netherlands though, and here it's still legal to keep digital copies of anything you own hardcopy of..
I'll delete the link ASAP.
