Actually, some of the Onyx Boox ereaders will play audio. There is no jack so you will need bluetooth speakers or earphones.

As of July 7 in the US and July 20 elsewhere, the basic Kindle will have bluetooth capability.

Yes, but unless something un-publicized is in the software it won't play audiobooks it's for accessibility features.

This does not imply it will play audiobooks. At this point, it is just for 'screen reader' functionality (VoiceView).

I doubt very much they'll add audiobook support, or even standalone TTS. VoiceView lets them compete for government contracts for devices that need to conform to ADA ('Americans with Disability Act') requirements, and I imagine they are going to sell many many Kindles that way (far less expensive to deploy and support than tablets, if all you need is a reading device). People looking for TTS would be a tiny fraction of that. But clearly the hardware is there now, so maybe if enough people ask...

You can purchase used Kindle Keyboard and Kindle Touch on amazon.com, I think they are less than $40, even for 3G models (but supply is limited). These do support audible and mp3 playing, though the experience is not a good one.

My Atak would play any MP3. It was a pain for Audiobooks because it would not use a playlist and chained the files in whatever order it found them

A Sandisk Zip+ is Tiny. It handles some Audiobooks (encrypted) as well as MP3 playlists. I use 'On The Earphones' which, one earpiece is bigger that the Zip, but they do help when riding on a noisy BART

I believe Onyx Boox C67ml Carta has a 3.5mm audio jack for headphones and TTS compatibility.

I love my Kindle Keyboard, but honestly, the TTS and audiobook capability of a Fire is absolutely superior. If you shut off the light while playing the TTS or audiobook, your battery power will be extended. I think you are better off getting the ereader you like plus an Apple Ipod Nano unless you choose to get a tablet.
