Stripping series info on import
Is it possible to automatically strip the series info when adding books? I looked through the prefs for adding books, but the closest solution I could see was trying to match a regex from the file name. Unfortunately, the file names I have don't have the series info in them.
For example, whenever I download fanfic books from ffn, the series info always shows up as book 1 of the original fiction series (ie every HP fanfic downloaded and imported has series metadata "book 1 of Harry Potter"). I would like to have all series info stripped out when I import any books and wondered if anyone knows of a solution to do this. Thanks for any instructions or links to any threads that helps solve this. Last edited by BetterRed; 09-08-2015 at 02:51 AM. |

Import (add book) from file has 2 choices:
Filename, which uses the template or Metadata from inside the book If you have need to clean, consider using an 'Intake' library, then use Copy to library (right click), when done. |

The 2 import options you highlight won't solve my issue. If I use the filename to determine metadata, it will strip the series data, but I will loose the "comments" metadata attached to the book which I still want to keep. If I use the data from inside the book, I don't get any options of which data to keep or strip. It's too bad you can't access the edit bulk metadata features when importing books. Again, thanks for taking the time to reply. |

How does this series info get in the book in the first place? If you are downloading Fanfiction with the FanFicFare plugin, there should be a way to customize it to strip series info when downloading books.

Reading the original post, I think what is happening is that the site is creating the epubs an setting these calibre series name in the metadata. But, they are not setting the index. On import, calibre is extracting the series info, but as there is no index, it is using 1 for all the books. I have seen this elsewhere where the series is being used for a common "Universe" and there is no real order for the books in the universe. Of course, maybe they site is creating the books with the series index set to 1.
In any case, I haven't seen a solution for this. But, I also haven't looked. Thinking about my book adding process, I wouldn't mind if the metadata editor was displayed after adding a single book. The first thing I do after adding a book is to fix the metadata and cover. Automating that step could be handy. I'm not sure what I would want to see if I added a few books. |
