Calibre temp files keep disappearing

I know Calibre has a habit of leaving behind old temp files. But my problem is quite the opposite.

Whenever I'm having books open in the Calibre Reader, after a few hours y the Table of Contents links invariably stop working and I'm greeted by Error: Nos such location. The location refers to temporary folder created by Calibre in AppData/Local/Temp and sure enough, all Calibre temp files have gone from that location.

After dismissing the error prompt, the book freezes and won't scroll. Re-opening the book recreates the temp folder and clears the issue temporarily but I'd like to stop it from occurring in the first place.

I'm running Calibre 2.35.0 on Windows 8.1. As far as I know, I'm not running any third party housekeeping apps that would touch the temp folder.

How should I troubleshoot this?

I would double- and triple- check that your antivirus is not blocking calibre's access to temp files. (I assume you have one and yes, they have been known to mess around with calibre accessing the temp folder.)

Figure out what on your computer is deleting the temp files and un-install it. If you cant find it by looking over the list of installed programs then you'll just have to uninstall them one at a time. Start with any program that has security/anti-virus/clean/protect/speedup in its name.

Thank you for your swift comments, guys. I really appreciate your help.

I might have misdiagnosed the problem. At least the temp directory referred in the error message seems to be there until I exit the program (after which it disappears, as it should). Here's the most recent error message:

do you have a cleanup utility that auto runs (scheduled) frequently or when the system is almost idle?

Not on my current system, no. But see my comment on possibly misdiagnosing what's going on. I might have closed the program before noticing that the temp files aren't there (which is what's supposed to happen and AFAIK isn't indicative of a problem). I'll post more info when I can reproduce the error.

@lawnparty -try giving calibre a dedicated location for its temporary files. This is done via the CALIBRE_TEMP_DIR environment variable see Environment variables

Relocation won't fix the problem but it does make it easy to monitor. And you could exclude it from things like antivirus and content indexing without compromising security or losing functionality elsewhere.

Thanks, will take a stab at setting up a dedicated temp folder for Calibre.

In the meantime, here's the latest error message.

ERROR: No such location: The location pointed to by this item does not exist.
C:\Users\[myname]\AppData\Local\Temp\calibre_qr4d_b\0ixbhd_ebook_it er\ops\xhtml\ch11.html

The bolded part was nowhere to be found. Local\Temp didn't contain a folder named ops, only an OPF document called content. The non-bolded part of the path was there, however. Not sure what (if anything) this suggests.

Before receiving yet another error, I had removed any programs that could reasonably expect to touch the temp folder. I'm only running Windows Defender for security.

May be an other idea. Do you use tools like CCleaner? That happen to me sometimes in the past. The tool deletes temp files after closing IE or Firefox (it's a default setup in CC) and in order of this also all calibre temp files.

I've used CCleaner in the past but I don't have it (or other such utilities) installed at the moment. Also, the temp folder created by Calibre doesn't disappear, just some of the files. (See my previous post.) Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Next I'll try re-installing Calibre to see if it makes a difference. Other troubleshooting tips are still appreciated!
